Photographer’s Note

New Zealand's most famous sheep stealer, James McKenzie owned a dog named Friday. Mackenzie County and pass are named after him. His dog Friday drove approximately one thousand sheep towards Burkes Pass in 1855 from Levels Station. McKenzie was apprehended at the Mackenzie Pass by an overseer for the Rhodes Brothers at Levels Station. Friday lived the rest of his years at Levels Station. The statue of the dog has become the symbol of pioneering sheep farming in the Mackenzie and sits on the shore of Lake Tekapo.
