Photographer’s Note

Hi all. This is Lake Dunstan, a man made hydro-electric lake built in 1993.
This lake has flooded many farms and orchards and the entire town of Cromwell had to be relocated. There is also quite a bit of our young countries history submerged below the water here, relics from our early settlers and gold mining era.
The dam is sited nearby the town of Clyde which is sited below water level.
Clyde was also the start of our cycle odyssey. (Photos to follow later)
The weather was extraordinarily calm and I got lucky with the light also.

More info; Clyde Dam is the largest concrete gravity dam in New Zealand consisting of one million cubic metres of concrete. It's height is 100 metres, width at base is 70 metres, width at crest 10 metres and length at crest 490 metres.
Controversy surrounded the building of the dam, which saw a number of orchards and houses removed from the Cromwell Gorge to allow the flooding of the river valley. The lake formed by the dam, Lake Dunstan, is 26.4 square kilometres in size. Its recreational uses include water-skiing, boating, canoeing, jet boating, boat cruises and eco-tours of the abundant fish and bird life.
The lake extends from the historical township of Clyde through the Cromwell Gorge to Cromwell township, with one arm travelling up the Kawarau River to Bannockburn and the other widening out over the Lowburn Flats.

You have done very well with this reflection. I really like the almost perfect mirror and the idea of symmetry is superb. Well done.
For the submerged history, there much lots of talk about the conclusion of a dam in Portugal which, if done, will submerge 25,000 years old (Upper Paleolithic Era) rock work. The construction of the dam was suspended in Nov 1995 and 10 years ago the place was classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Hey Paul,

The 50/50 split really emphasises the reflection of that beautiful sky. Perhaps it's my eyes, but I think the hill looks strange - a little grey like it's had it's exposure increased post-processing and introduced some white noise. You could probably correct it by selectively increasing mid tone contrast on that part of the shot or reducing the gamma.

Hi Paul,

I do not know whart to think about such artificial lakes. It looks splendid, nice place for water sports but on the other hand, many houses cities and orchards are under water now. Fantastic reflections of the sky. Impressive photo.

Wonderful one, there is many beauty parts in your photo. I liked long, diagonal silhouettes with fantastic light on Cromwell's autumn trees that they are just another fantastic frame in main frame. What a beautiful landscape, perfect day, some clouds to make the sky more interesting, the reflection is wonderful and is almost in perfect symetry. You can it upside down almost. I was there as well a few days before you ;-)
But nothing to see with the nice wether conditions you had here... it was raining cats and dogs and snow was falling as soon as the road began to climb a little...
This so calm and peaceful image is outstanding.
You caught a nearly perfect reflection which I always love.
Instead of photographing the lake, the weather pushed me to http://www.northburn.co.nz/wine.html where I can recommend you the Pinot Noir :o)

The mirror works well, giving a polarized like effect to the sky!
It is amazing to see a lake this size so calm, and I doubt nothing manmade can give better reflections (in spite this is a reservoir hehehe)...

Fabulous reflections in this symmetric compo. For these kinds of shots I guess central horizon suits fine, as you can just flip the picture & the effect would just be the same! The darkish clouds look more dramatic in the reflection, while a tinge of green, lit up by sunlight separates reality with reflection. Fine shot!
