Photographer’s Note

Hi all. This is the first of my South Island photos from our recent “overseas” trip. [We did cross one body of water to get there ;-) ]
This was taken from the top of the Lake Ruataniwha dam and shows the how the area has been planted out to beautify it after the dam was built.
As you can see autumn was in full force when we visited and I’m sure the colours are more vivid than we get up here in the North Island. I expect it has something to do with our milder climate, warmer winters and cooler summers.

Hallo Paul,

Good to see you back, hope you had a great trip and it seems you crossed also my footsteps somewhere, so i'm looking forward what you made of it. The colours ahve turn to autumn, brown and reddisch, must be also a spectacular sight when seeing all that greenery turn in to these colours.
I'm not a big fan of all those electrity lines, but in your story they belong there as part of the dam, so thay may stay.
So you took also the ferry instead of flying. I liked the ferry boat a lot, very calm and relaxing and on the last part great views when entering the sounds....

Paul,
You make me laugh, I forgot about you folks down in the other end of the world, Your spring hasn't yet sprung. So you show us autumn colors which is nice opposit mood. Good composition here, I like the more natural tone, not over saturated, though it can use just a little more brightness, just a tad. Sharpness is a little soft here. the workshop image is great, more light, and sharper. Regardless, it a beautiful image.

Hello Paul,
very nice combination of colours you got on this one with all these warm autumnal tones.
I like the vertical format here specially because of the road which links the foreground with all the warm tones with the background and the cooler tones of the mountain range.

I believe you did cross 'over the sea' without a need for a passport clearance. Unlike in Malaysia, if I travel from Borneo to West Malaysia, I cross the sea too and need passport or papers to clear immigration, but vice versa they need passport to enter Sarawak.

This is a lovely color tone of landscape scenery from high angle although I am still not very used to southern hemisphere's upside down seasons, very much needing a time pause to think about currency exchange conversion for the seasons too.

Good depth and the electric towers look like space crafts ready to launch :)

Hi Paul,

Not that the landscape isn't beautiful, but I guess that not everybody would expect to be possible to get such an achieved photo. The compo is superb, the zigzagging road makes it very catchy graphically besides giving a strong sense of depth and motion. But every other detail seem to combine to make a perfect compo: the disposition of the trees, their nuances of Autumnal hues, the mountains on the distance with he picturesque clouds above... Even the electric poles look nice!

Congratulations, I find it very inspired.

I like also the WS. It lacks the impact of this one, but the colours and the reflections on the water are wonderful.

Hi Paul,
You're one of the few that can make these towers work, I think they are your specialty. Here you've made the towers add an extra the Z-curve of the road. Nice contrast between the fall colors and the great thunderheads.

Here we are coming into the summer and you have given us this lovely autumn landscape :)

I've often thought electrical towers were a blight on what would otherwise be awesome natural landscapes. However, the way you've featured these 3 towers in this image makes me see them in a different light.

I adore how the meandering roadway goes out of our view on the left and then comes back into the frame to lead our eyes center, and then back and to the left again. I also enjoy the warm yellow-ocher hue in the trees that's echoed in the dry hills but also picked up in a strange way by the thin layer of smog in the air. The deep focus allows us to see far into the distance in perfect clarity.

Overall, it's a subtle and well balanced image that you've captured with amazing skill. Congratulations!

Hello Paul, your note reminds when my wife & i were going to Tasmania, we phoned ahead to book our accommodation, when the person on the other end asked where we were from she replied Australia, I think she thought we were also going overseas. ;-), A very beautiful view with those Autumn colours making an impact, contrasting well with the greens & blues. It is good to see that the are around the dam has been re regenerated, those ugly pylons tell a story & fit in well with your note.

A nice autumn picture, some of the trees already already have change from green to golden. The street adds DOF. The clouds are just lovely, so colors and contrasts are vivid. It looks very lonely, is there nobody living? Nonetheless I like your picture. Well done
