Photographer’s Note
This is the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw, the only coal fired passenger carrying vessel still operating in the southern hemisphere.
Affectionately known as the “Lady of the Lake”, the TSS Earnslaw has a special place in the hearts of Queenstown people. She has been transporting goods to remote settlements and carrying passengers on beautiful Lake Wakatipu since 1912.
Owned and operated by Realtours, TSS Earnslaw takes visitors back and forth a number of times each day from Queenstown to Walter Peak High Country Farm, on the western shores of Lake Wakatipu.
On board you can take a guided tour of the ship to learn about it's history ending at it's onboard museum full of early pictures from it's construction through to it's modern use. It also has a formal saloon for dining and in the upstairs area on the return voyage song books were handed out and everyone sang along to the tunes being played by the onboard pianist.
There was a little bit of singing rivalry going on between the Kiwi's and the Aussie's with the usual chant of Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi coming from the large Aussie group, it was a lot of fun.
A couple of famous people who have dined on the Tss Earnslaw have been Queen Elizabeth and Bill Clinton when he was President.

Hello Jude,
Fabulous image, informed by an excellent note. These ferries are also seen in Istanbul, plying their way between wharfs along the Bosporus. If you ever saw the Agatha Christie film 'Orient Express,' in the opening scene Sean Connery is on the deck of one of these ferries, conspiring!
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hi Jude,
Classic style steamer on a mountain lake. It looks just great. Almost head-on angle works well. Somewhat hazy weather provides harmonous tones.

Hi Jude,
It is like meeting an old friend again. I used take a similar boat to cross the Bosphorus every morning. They disappeared all at once. Maritime lines modernised !!! Except for one which is restored and is a luxury yacht now. The ones in Istanbul were made in British shipyards; Glasgow and Bristol if I remember them right. TFS mate. You made my day.

Hello Jude,
A beautiful view of the steamer, clearly rendered against a background of mountains. Unusual to photograph a ship without the sky but this really enhances the beauty and contrast of the view.
Well done.
Regards,
Paul

Hi Jude,
I remember this wonderful old girl starring in a BMW commercial back in the 1980's.
A lovely capture, even on a dull day. Good composition, the off-set from centre works very well.
I'll leave all the comments about, "stoking the fire" alone.
Cheers
Peter
