Photographer’s Note

This mirror reflection and optical illusion caught my eye on a frosty morning at Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes National Park, in New Zealand's South Island: the water level is actually just a few inches below the frost-covered wooden planks on the jetty - maybe not where it appears to be?

Interesting composition. Great natural colours. Wonderful symmmetric reflections. Very good sharpness. Well done. I like the picture. But ... in my opinion ... a bit cropping of bottom part of this picture is necessary.

Hello Jeff, nice shot and very beautiful place...but your PP is not good. To much blue colors and there is no black colors. The bridge is not looking good. Under the bridge must be dark area and now is blue. The contrast of this shot also can be more attractive. I know well your perfect landscape photos and I want to see more quality photos from you. This shot is under your level.

Hi Jeff,

Beautiful site this lake. Like your composition in how you've given prominence to the awesome reflection. Foreground rocks are interesting as is the frost tinged jetty. The jetty is really interesting too. There is a bit of visual illusion there as at first glance it almost appears to be floating or standing top what are actually reflections. Nicely seen and captured.

Such perfect stillness and tranquility to this image, and the wooden pole reflections do create an excellent optical illusion. You've positioned the jetty nicely in the frame whilst also providing a wondeful view of the crystal clear waters, and the snow-capped mountains in the background. Very well done.

btw...why didn't you turn the shot upside down?? I think it would have also been working very well

Hi Jeff,
Yeah, maybe just a bit strong on the blue filter, but nonetheless a really good capture. Uncommon to get reflections this good with not a mark on the surface of the water and for me you've made the most of this wonderful location. Frost on the planks eh, hope you had your long johns on.

Not like the day I was in the same spot Jeff,
It was drizzling with very poor light - wish I'd seen it like this (I was there at a similar time of year).
This is a superb photo - crisp, clean with great reflections and the stones under the water come through very well (and yes the frost!)

This is cool! The clear water and reflection creates a bit of an optical illusion making the dock seem to be suspended in mid air. The reflection provides excellent depth and balance for the shot. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail.
