Photographer’s Note

...We have now turned the corner after a wonderful 3- hour journey across Cook Strait .
The marvellous Marlborough Sounds are an extensive network of sea-drowned valleys created by a combination of land subsidence and rising sea levels at the northern end of the South Island of New Zealand.
The Queen Charlotte , Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds make up the Marlborough Sounds.
Tory Channel is one of the drowned valleys that form the Marlborough Sounds.
At it's western end it joins the larger Queen Charlotte Sound which it meets halfway along the latter's length . It's eastern point meets Cook Strait close to the latter's narrowest point.
One of the two candidates for the easternmost point in the South Island ( along with Cape Campbell) lies right at the entrance of Tory Channel and that is exactly what you see here !
Ironically, it is called West Head !!

According to Maori mythology, the sounds are the prow of the sunken Waka (cano) of Aoraki . I will tell you about this legend later on .

The Marlborough Sounds is a natural wonder unparalleled in N.Z. !!!!
