Photographer’s Note
This was taken early in the morning on Mirror Lake, Milford Sound, NZ
------------------------------------------------
This image has been posted a long time ago. I wanted to address a critique received today and to see if after all this time I could process the original any better.
I have tried to maintain a little more light and detail on the foreground leaves, which I think I have succeeded in. I ran the picture through NeatImage to get it a little smoother.
Was it worth doing? I let you be the judge of that.

Oh wow, what a colour combination. Clean and sharp in the foreground, then fading off helped by the eerie mist hanging over the rushes. I'm just about waiting for Gollum to creep out of the water ;-))

Good shot Nina! Beautiful scenery and great colours. i like the reflection and the layer of mist underneath the lit up hills is very effective. One thing is that you have focussed on the reeds in the foreground. Was this deliberate? I wonder how the shot would be altered had you focused somewhere midground. Well taken - i really want to go to milford sound!!
cheers

Wow! I like this picture very much! Very nice shot. The sharpness in the foreground, the mist and the colors.

It's still a lovely shot, but isn't it crooked? Try rotating it 6°CW and see what you think :-)

Wonderful shot, Nina. "Lifting" the foreground has added a great deal of depth to the image, and there's a lovely balance between the sharp, clear reflections and the soft mist and wooded hillside beyond. I must agree about the tilt, though; I don't think it adds to the photo, but rather bothers the viewer (well, this one at least!). Thanks for sharing this beautiful image!

Good picture. I like the composition, specially the forground. This picture is a success in the sens that we can feel the atmosphere of the place at dawn.

Hmmm....both are very pleasing to look at Nina. But would say I prefer the sunlight tones on the background mountain presented in your original photo and the foreground lightness and reflection of the second shot.
TidLidom (22) 2004-03-29 21:06
What a great picture! Good composition and the colors are beautiful.
The kind of photo I would have liked to do myself!
Keep going, Nina

Yes, worth the effort Nina. Still one of my favourite TE shots. Normally I don't go in for borders but I think yours works well - although the top and left side seem 1 pixel thinner than the right and bottom. Was this deliberate? I like the tilt; it's part of what makes this dreamy image work for me.

I have seen this picture now and it is really a great combination of everything..I liked the ws with increased saturation but I prefer to keep the angle as it is, as for me that makes it more dreamy...

Hi Nina,
You caught a magic moment - very nice.
I might crop it a little tighter. Try cutting out the top edge that shows the mountains in the sunlight. I think that bright strip draws your eyes away from the powerful part of the photo, which is the fog and reflection. I also agree about straightening - The view is dreamy in real life and doesn't need much help from the photographer! - Alan

Surreally breathtaking.
I have read about Fiordland and its sounds from National Geographic and well, I am hooked to go there.
You had captured, the mountain even if you had cropped it off. The trail of mist, glistening stream and the thick grass gives a feel of this river valley scene.
I gave you a full smile.

I do not remember the first post, but this one is incredible. These blue tones !! I also like how you captured the mist. Very good postwork with Neatimage, Nina.

I see only of the beauty there, colours are so magnificent and the réflection is magnificent. I may not help you for the rotation or not of the image.
Moi, je n'y vois que de la beauté, les couleurs sont tellement magnifiques et la réflection est superbe. Je ne puis vous aider pour la rotation ou pas de l'image.

I have visited this spot (and even photographed it, much less successfully than you did here). I think what makes it work particularly well, in addition to retaining the flax in the foregropund, is that you have taken your camera to a spot where the mountains are angled - the tourist spot (with the cute Mirror Lake sign upside down) is much more front on, in my recollection, and less interesting.

Hi Nina, i love this photo, the color and composition it very nice , maybe if you show the top of the mountain its more beautiful.

C'est une très belle photo avec de très belles couleurs. On n'a pas l'habitude de voir un reflet en diagonale c'est ce qui fait l'originalité de la photo. Je suis du meme avis que certains la photo gagnerait à etre rognée du haut. Bravo

superb job, both with the first and second post. nice job with the strong reflections in the water. perhaps a touch of overexposure in the far top of the picture.
