Photographer’s Note

Well the rain certainly added an spooky atmostphere. Behind those clouds is a valley and we are at a reasonable altitude (about 900m above sea level), but there are no cliff faces that would give you vertigo. We are coming down from Mackinnon Pass and the track is rocky here and when it rains the water runs between your feet as you walk. But this is all part of the adventure, and crossing Mackinnon Pass definitely provided the most breathtaking views. We hired one walking stick each at Queenstown for $5 per day and they helped in this part of the track. They helped us keep better balance and they helped to take some pressure of the knees when walking down hill. Having said that, the sticks are not neccessary if you don't feel like carying them.
