Photographer’s Note

The view at dawn of the stunning Milford Sound with the reflection of the 1,692 metre Mitre Peak in the water.

Milford Sound is a fjord in the south-west of New Zealand's South Island and one of the countrys biggest tourist attractions.

Milford Sound has an average annual rainfall of over 6800 mm on 182 days a year, and this is a high level even for the West Coast of New Zealand. Milford Sound is known as the wettest place in New Zealand and one of the wettest in the world. Rainfall can reach 250 mm during a span of 24 hours.

As you can imagine, I was happy to get this view when I was there. If you do visit, remember to take insect repellent as the area is home to the sandfly and plenty of them.

I'm glad you were treated to some clear weather, and you made good use of it. This is a wonderful and natural view of this location...the colours and lighting subdued, but very natural. I really like the composition with the reflection of the highest peak well positioned in the frame. Very well done.

What a beautiful place Russell. The atmosphere is so peaceful. I like the clouds hanging over the mountains. The use of the water to capture the reflection of the mountain is very good. The sky is a little washed out though. I tried a workshop to help bring out the colors a bit. Hope you like it.

Hi Russell. Impressive PoV that cranes the head so to speak towards the heavens to gaze at the enormity of the mountain chain and that makes us look down at the still water and the beautiful reflection. One of the best i have seen of this place. Regards. Klaudio.

Wonderful scene, beautifully composed. The tranquility of this dawn view is superbly captured. I think Ryan's WS adds a little to the shot, and perhaps I would also try to bring out a little more detail in the shaded areas by lightening them selectively. But wonderful shot all the same.

HI Russel, incredible landschape you share with us. I like teh way you positiond the eyectcaher, peak and reflection, at the left and also like your choice for a low POV.

This is a wonderful shot of Milford Sound!!
I was there but didn't get to see this beautiful view.
You captured the scene superbly! I especially like the reflection of the Mitre Peak.
I really envy your luck of being there on one of those rare sunny days!!!
I think a polarizing filter might have improved the contrast between the sky and the hazy hills.
