Photographer's Note

Sitting in a coffee shop at New Zealand's Auckland Airport, I spotted the unusual scene: in the colored cylindrical lights of the coffee shop foreground and the the monument, "One Tree Hill," on the distant hill.

We were about to start a one-week circuit, visiting Rotorua and Wellington in the North Island, and subsequently Queenstown in the South Island. Finally, we would fly back to Auckland and board the interminable series of flights back to Washington, DC.

To provide a proper perspective on this scene, I would like to cite a photo by Janice Dunn, a Trekearth member, inactive in recent years, Maungakiekie, One Tree Hill. She also provided a note covering the history of the setting.

Not having ready access to my Nikon, I used my iPhone V. producing a picture that is pixelated and dark, but it is the juxtaposition of the distant horizon and the multicolored lights that makes the scene more interesting, featuring the abstract artistic aspects of the composition rather than the sharpness and exposure.
