Photographer’s Note
Since the death of British DJ John Peel I have been thinking about how he influenced my musical tastes. One of the musical styles he introduced me to in the mid 90’s was Jungle or Drum ‘n’ Bass as it’s now become.
Since coming to Wellington I have got to know DJ Conspiracy a little, a practitioner of this fine musical style. Here he is in action on the decks playing some cool tunes.
This was taken without flash whilst propped up against a bar, so please see the blur and noise as artistic rather than something going tragically wrong. I carry my point and shoot camera pretty much everywhere - I think it would be tragic to miss moments like this, can you feel the movement in his hands? The concentration?
I am slightly unhappy with the framing here, the rectangular shapes in the background spoil it a little for me, I was considering a crop of just the decks and the blurred hands, but then it wouldn’t be a portrait...
