Photographer’s Note

So far I have shown you geothermal features that exhibited mainly red or yellow colours. Today it's the green effect of Lake Ngakoro.

Ngakoro translates as The Grandfather. The strange green water of the lake is caused by the presence of sulphur and ferrous salts.
The lake was formed by a volcanic eruption more than 700 years ago and it is still geothermally active. The pale colour at the bottom of the picture is water entering the lake as it comes down a small waterfall from Frying Pan Flat.
The wide range of colours in the Wai-o-Tapu thermal area is due to different mineral elements:
Green -Colloidal sulphur/ferrous salts
Orange -antimony
Purple -Manganese oxide
White -Silica
Yellow-primrose -Sulphur
Red-brown -Iron oxide
Black -Sulphur and carbon

The so called “rotten egg smell” is associated with hydrogen sulphide.
