Andesite is a grey, fine-grained volcanic rock, chiefly plagioclase and feldspar. Andesite’s character usually results from the melting and assimilation of rock fragments by magma rising to the surface. Rocks nearer the surface tend to be higher in silicon, because silicon is less dense than iron and magnesium, components that increase at greater depths.
Takaka marble comes from Takaka Hill otherwise known as ‘Marble Mountain’ is found between Nelson and Golden Bay in the South Island of New Zealand. The name ‘Marble Mountain; is derived from the lime and marble formations that cover the twisting road to the mountain. There is also a Maori legend that takes place in this area, the local Maori people believed that at the top of the hill lives the Taipo (devil). They took shelter, and fled when they heard rumbling sounds deep underground believing it was Taipo. These noises were thought to have caused damage to the underground drainage system.
Quarrying of the hill took place in early 1900’s, this took place when the road to the mountain was opened. The marble became popular after being used during construction of Parliament Buildings in the capital Wellington. The marble was chosen due to its strength and its attractive finish.

A very fine vision of mother earth, and how pleasing that the artists vision was so all encompassing of all the people's. A very calm and serene face too, considering the active and volatile place it's materials came from! I wonder, what is swquare object that she is holding?
Great choice in black and white too. As ever, excellent note, thank you.
All the best
