Photographer’s Note

Mt Egmont or Mt Taranaki (as it is now known) a volcanic cone mountain dominates the landscape of the region, dictates the weather, and generally makes its presence felt. Like all Mountains its beautiful in all its various "robes" either covered in snow or as seen here with very little other than the fringe at the top. During this years drought the snow almost melted completely.

Thomas Brackens poem was taught to most of my age group at school perfectly fits this particular mood of the mountain

"Egmont, monarch of a mountain, bold majestic, solemn, grand. Rising from the pleasant pastures, climbing to the clouds alone, peerless and without a rival, proudly sits he on the throne. It is morning in the summer and the monarch is arrayed in his pure white cap and mantle which are never known to fade. All the blue above is spotless, only one small cloud is seen, rising from the mountains bosum, nestling twixt the gold and green, but it fails to reach the apex and it curls itself away round about the monarch shoulders like a silken scarf of grey.
