The Gathering Place in the Pacific
Yacht Marina, Town Basin, Whangarei
Kia ora! Welcome to Whangarei (Fong-ar-ray)
"Gateway to the North"
The sun was nearly setting behind me when I took this shot of the Whangarei Basin. The clouds were turning pink and the sky was darkening.
The city of Whangarei has much to offer, including parks, shopping, movie complex, and award winning restaurants. Whangarei makes an ideal base for visitors to Northland.
Whangarei, city (1996 pop. 45,892), N North Island, New Zealand, on the Pacific Ocean. It is the leading city on the Northland Peninsula and an important port for coastal trade. There are textile mills, cement and fertilizer plants, breweries, and an oil refinery in the city.
Whangarei is a small, safe city with a peaceful learning environment. Situated two hours drive north of New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland. Whangarei boasts some of New Zealand’s finest beaches. It is a gateway to the Bay of Islands, one of New Zealand’s most beautiful aquatic playgrounds. Water-skiing, wind surfing, snorkelling, scuba diving, yachting, kayaking and dolphin and whale watching are just some of the activities of interest. Whangarei has an urban population of approximately 47,000 and enjoys a very temperate climate.
The City of Whangarei began with a small settlement on the south bank of the Hatea River (Har-tea-ah), clustered around a natural port known then as Ahipupu (Ar-he-pu-pu) and known today as the Town Basin. It grew southwards from there to become the cultural, entertainment, commercial and service centre for Northland.
The Whangarei Town Basin: Of particular interest is the waterfront area known as the Town Basin. Long a haven to both local and overseas yachts, the waterfront has recently been redeveloped. It now boasts an interesting collection of art galleries, gift shops, and cafes.

Nice late afternoon sun in this one. The quality of the light combined with the stillness of the water give a sense of calm tranquility.
To the casual observer this shot could look disorderly, then look again and there is order in it. This appeals to the human desire to find (or create) order in chaos.

Hi Janice
The complicated and crowded yatches give a beautiful rendering of this place. With the calm water, it give a good reflection.
Interesting text, too.
Well done, Janice.

Hi Janice - superb low light and lovely reflections, excellent timing, the sky also looks impressive, in my experience Whangarei is synonomous with constant heavy rain, so unlike this crisp and cool looking view.

Hi Janice - really nice image! Great sunset colours & reflections but what I really like about this one is how the masts & posts in the water alinged in parallel with each other. It's a nice effect that draws the eye away into the distance.

Hi Janice,
The light and colours are very nice with this magnificent reflection.
The diagonal line of boats is very welcome, as the contrast between sunny and shadowy parts of the harbour.

A good perpspective view on those boats with their masts as a reapeating rythme and your colors here are very balanced and pleasable, pleasant the reflections in the water.

Ciao Janice
What a lovely image, the light was perfect. You have also captured the reflections and the serenity of Whangarei. Trust a Kiwi to do justice to a sail boat : )
