Dramatic Clouds Photo

Photographer’s Note

This was the sky that greeted me one Saturday morning recently. The cloud cover was incredibly dense and, even at 11:20am, when this photo was taken, everything was quite dark but the colours seemed considerably more vivid than normal. This was the best of a short series of photos I shot from the end of my driveway at that time. Within a few short minutes of this pic being taken, the scene had changed considerably and the shapes that made this scene so powerful had dissolved into a featureless form.
I’ve slightly increased the brightness and contrast but the roof of the long farm building (a shelter for cows when the soil is so soft that they do excessive damage to the pasture) appeared very bright so it was selected independently and darkened. It was at exactly the right (wrong?) angle and reflected the available light directly towards the camera.

Hi Tony, nicely composed. I would be just bit more careful about oversharpening... ;) The line over the horizont is little bit disturbing.

Very nice landscape, I like the composition. The fence leads the eyes in to the image nicely done. I allso like the clouds, they make the landscape come alive. TFS.

We've also had many similar skies and clouds like this lately Tony. I've taken a few shots of them as well.
I like your composition Tony, showing us a these beautiful clouds over the Northland farmland. I have done a WS to lighten up the greenery, I hope you like it,

Hi Tony - the post processing is pretty successful here, especially the exposure on the roof looks ideal, maybe the trees on top of the hills should be darker, as that's the only area where the selective brightening is a little obvious (or maybe it's the oversharpening mentioned by Radim that I'm seeing), wonderful sky.
