Photographer’s Note
The fresh water Kai Iwi lakes are situated 25.8 kilometres north-west of Dargaville along State Highway 12 near the small settlement of Kaihu. The turnoff to the lakes is signposted at Omamari Road, which is on the regions Twin Coast Discovery Tourist Route. There are three lakes. Lake Kai-Iwi in the south, Lake Taharoa (the largest), and Lake Waikere in the north, situated within Taharoa Domain, a 538 ha recreation reserve.
They come alive in summer as a popular camping spot. There are facilities for swimming, boating, windsurfing, water-skiing, camping and trout fishing. You can walk through lush farmland to the wild west coast where 100km of golden sands stretch south to Pouto, the northern headland of the notorious entrance to the Kaipara Harbour.
For more information have a look at the Fish and Game New Zealand brochure for this location or the New Zealand communities webpage for Kai Iwi Lakes.
While heading around to Lake Waikere, I stopped at this little, shaded bay. Although it was very cloudy at the time, the weather was very warm and this family was making the most of it.
Alterations to this image include the following: -
- Colour balance to overcome strong blue tint in this scene (a slight increase to red and yellow)
- Increase saturation
- Increase brightness
- Increase contrast

Tony

Hallo Tony!
This one I like! It shows such a wonderful calm and beautiful scenery. The look through the bushes works very well here and it emphasizes the immpression of loneliness and seclusion even though your note tells something other. A lovely photo!
Greetings from Germany, where spring is beginning - and have a nice weekend!

Kia Ora Tony,
Nice capture of the lakes, looking quiet at this time of year. I was there in January and it was a bit of a zoo with all the people. Still, a beautiful place, nicely framed image.

Hi Tony,
Very nice light captured for that shot. I also likt the colours and the peaceful atmosphere of the place. Fishermen are perfectly placed and add interest to the composition.
Nice job!
Quentin.

Heya Tony,
nice image from New Zeland! Position of fishermen (swimmers) is very good. Increase in saturation/brightnes/contrast obviously helped the photo! Very nice work, thanks for sharing.

Hi Tony.
What a nice piece of paradize you share here! In facts, it's a bit funny, but with these pine trees and this nice lake, it reminds me some places in Southern France.
Maybe you increased a little bit too much the yellow component, but it can also be due to my screen settings.
Thanks for sharing.
PS: I don't know if you're a rugby fan, but I recently thought about your country after seeing the results of the European 6 nations tournament and I realized your national team shouldn't have any problem to become world Champion this year!!!
;o)
Cheers!

Hi Tony - nice catch of these folks enjoying nature, but I have to say the yellow tinge looks too much on my monitor as well, the lakes look beautiful and pristine, but the trees should be greener and less red.

Hi Tony
Nice comp. I really like how the trees frame the fisherman. Very sharp. New Zealand is a very beautiful country. Well done.

Wonderful one, my friend!
Makes me wish I could take a swim in it right now. Those tree branches form a perfect frame and the colors are awesome.
A truly excellent job.
Warm regards,
Fulvio.

HI Tony,
This photo definitely speaks of the lazy days of summer. As such it works on nostalgic levels for me. Your notes are extremely helpful for backgoud and technical aspects of your shot as well.
I look forward to seeing more of your photos.
Best regards to you,
José
