Spring in Pohangina Photo

Photographer’s Note

Hi all. Sue and I spent a very enjoyable day exploring the Pohangina Valley recently. We had a rare fine and windless day for our explorations and left home early to try and catch the best light.
This is the Pohangina River at the lower end of the valley. The river gathers its waters from the Ruahine Ranges and runs on the western side foothills to empty into the Manawatu River.
The trees opposite are willows of some sort with their new leaves for the season, in WS a bonus shot to add a little perspective.

Hello Paul,

The backlight gives a fine effect in this creative composition!
The fresh green foliage gives an impression of a new start, and the composition is inventive with good use of shadows and reflections...

Hi Paul. Very appealing composition, a symphony in green with happy notes added by the dappled and shimmering light.One almost feels like singing- "There's a bluebird on my shoulder...", but then N.Z. wouldn't have the bluebird, just a blessed countryside. Regards. Klaudio.

Tou've framed a real beauty here; not only did you capture that lovely light through spring leaves but you added the spendid drama of a full shadow, like a reflection. I really like this unique compo.

Hi Paul,

It looks like a very challenging light situation, but the result you achieved is remarkable. I guess that strictly speaking, those glowing leaves are technically perfect, but what is counts is that you produced a beautiful atmosphere, reminiscent of something divine. Congratulations!

I like also the WS, not only because it presents another perspective of the same place (quite unexpected, because of the contrast between the apparent dryness of the river bed and the green on the BG). That expanse of rolling stones on the FG enhanced by the low POV produces an interesting visual impact.

Bonjour Paul.
C'est très appréciable de voir que certains font des photos de printemps alors qu'ici on fait plutôt des photos d'automne. J'aime bien la maitrise de la lumière qui vient de face et traverse les arbres qui viennent juste de prendre leurs feuilles.

Hello Paul:

I have not counted on luck to achieve a picture with sharpness for this style, I usually hinders the operation of the light that filtered through the branches. But to you, despite strong light, I was very good.

Without doubt that the central trees, are the protagonists, and reflexes are detailed very well in the green water. There is balance in the composition. Good job.

Hi Paul,
The shadows across the moving river, and just the little hints of blue sky at the corners make the composition nice. It's hard to shoot straight into the sun, but I think you've found a good balance of exposure here, it looks like a nice peaceful place.

Hello Paul.
This is a nice backlit shot, with the centrally placed trees casting very telling shadows into the foreground and on the river's surface. But at the same time there is plenty of detail preserved on the tree trunks (maybe some judicious dodging?). The delicate greenery and the light make for a very nice photo.

Good control of the direct light in this strong cross-light, with that you have caught a few beautiful shades of the trees on the river.

Taking a shot with backlight is sometimes very difficult to obtain a good result but here you got a very good one, nice spring scene with very good reflection. Good colors, sharpness and POV.

Taken against the sun, the colours are a bit different. Like the shadows fanning across the flowing river, with hints of blue sky in the corners. Exposure is well done here. Good work!
