Afternoon shadows Photo

Photographer’s Note

Hi all. One late afternoon this week one of my contemplative wanderings led me back up the hill for this view. As you can see the grass is growing again but its cooling down quickly and its not long till winter is here so there’s not going to be enough growth to make much difference, the green grass does looks good though.
The river in the BG is the Rangitikei River which has it’s headwaters on the Central Volcanic Plateau region of the North Island where the photo for my Hidden Mountain post was taken.

Hi Paul,
Nice high POV, almost like taken from a small plane! The backlight gave great shadows and colors... I like the texture of the meadow... almost feltlike!

Hello Paul,

Cooling down a little over there too eh? The areas surrounding Calgary just got a big dump of snow this evening. Calgary was on the path of the storm front but somehow managed to stay away from it. Imagine, snow in mid May!...Nice view of this river valley. I notice some harsh reflections on the water but not too much a problem. The colour saturation is very nice giving the scene a natural look. I like the way you framed the scene with the trees. Thanks Paul.

Paul, you surely enough have a varied group of subjects in your gallery. I really like this one; the long shadows are really accentuated because of your altitude. Grass has that aftenoon look to it and it is a well composed shot. In the area where you are how cold does your winter get? Will you have snow?

The subject is very interesting and the back lights are great, very goo game with lights and shade.
But I suggest you to crop the left part because the sun reflection is a little bit too strong.

Hi Paul, I used to drive through here pretty often and you have a flair for finding good vantage points and producing excellent compositions. NZ volcamic soils and good rain makes it a very good place for farming. TFS. Murray.

Interesting shadow play on many levels!
The line of trees gives a line of l-o-n-g shadows this time of day, and the sheep also throw shadows larger than themselves...

Beautiful place and beautiful light you assembled on this photo.
I like the peacefull mood of the photo and these long shadows which impact so much here.
Also the caddle downthere calmly having a 'meal' are interesting points.
The only thing which I find less good is that burned area on the water line.

it has been a while since I looked into your gallery and I see quite interesting posts that you placed in the meantime and yet the latest one is the one that attracts me most instantenously. The long shadows of the trees raoming through the filed and the high POV provides an almost surreal impression. The three cows (?) gives a fantastic additional sense of scale.

I must say your photos of NZ are giving nice windows into your world, without having us to fly down there and see the places. And you have somehow managed well to find corners and out-of-way views that show your own style of photography. This high angle shot is a good example to capture the light and shadow in elongation and displaying the fine texture of grass field.

It gives a different feeling to a shot from the ground. I particularly like the shine of light at upper left bouncing off the water. A glow. The light works well to the FG branches you used as frame.

Hi Paul,
Good high POV, which gives many perspective to the image. The direct and difficult light is controlled well, the exposure is good, and in addition, you have could catch these long shades that add a strong dynamism to the composition.
And the cows in the meadow give a nice touch of life.
It is a good work.

Hi Paul, you picked a good spot and time to capture these shadows. It's a very steep angle you've chosen, but the shadows really show up well. Colour and clarity throughout the shot also is very good, with great textures seen in the grass especially with the side lighting. The trees on either side, and those along the stream provide some great natural framing.

Jolie luminosité et reflet dans cette rivière.
Ces jeux d' ombres et de lumières sont au plus beau et donne envie d' un jour essayer d' en prendre un pareil.

The one advantage about the approach of winter is the chance of some better light at sociable hours, as demonstrated here. The long shadows are wonderful emphasised by your bird's eye POV. Well done

Your high POV is definitely the clincher here. The really long shadows of the trees, the cows/bulls with their strong shadows on the green grass is very appealing. I am not sure about the river (especially the left portion) & the other bank which does appear on the OE side. But otherwise, well done!

hello Paul,
you have some interesting shots in your gallery, I particularly like this one with the long shadows that add depth to the scene. the colours feel a bit washed out, but the composition is great, and I like a lot that you have included the animals in the frame, they emphasise how large the open space is. nice shot, I like it.
