Photographer’s Note
This was one of the best overnight walks I have ever done in my life. We went up to Mount Kaweka (1700m) in the Kaweka Ranges Forest Park. The park is in the northwest of Napier, about 1 hour 30 minutes by car. From the carpark you have many walking opportunities. We stayed in a hut, called Back ridge Hut. The evening was fantastic....because the views from the top are really stunning. In good weather conditions you can see Tongariro National Park. On this sunset photo you can see Mount Ruapehu in the background on the left side, the highest Mountain on the North Island. The two people (my fellow students in NZ) also enjoyed the stunning sunset and the views over the area.
Mount Kaweka is the highest peak in this area, the Hawkes Bay. The best thing is to visit the DOC office in Napier to get information abouut the park and the tracks. The Kaweka Ranges are not that popular like Tongariro NP or Lake Waikaremoana, but it is worth while going there.
