Photographer’s Note
This photo records a remarkable afternoon in Kaikoura, on the east coast of New Zealand and probably more famous for its whale watching.
The shot was taken from one of the whale watching boats, and I was torn between the remarkable whales and this amazing sunset.
The 70-300mm lens' image stabilizer was put to the test on a wildly pitching boat!

Nice composition and very smooth colours. I especially like the haze and its hue.

Great idea! I like the way you captured the special light at this time, and the way that it highlighted the shapes and forms of the hills. Great framing also, with the water very narrow at the bottom, and the sky cut out altogether, so we concentrate on just the subject. Great shot from a moving boat!

Amazing layers... Something that always creates a good landscape due to the way it involves the viewer. Nice composition and the clear contrast between layers works a treat, whilst still maintaining a good dynamic range capturing most of the detail. Well done!

Hi Simon, you show the coast so well, apart from the tilted waterline. You'll have to learn how to correct that!
The layers of mountains and hills look great with the haze over them. Well done.

Hi Simon.
Well done!
I appreciate the layers and how each mountain is bluer and bluer as you go into the distance.
Excelent!

Good shot Simon. You could straighten the horizon or tilt it some more to suggest the rocking of your boat! :)

Hi Simon - simply put- WOW! extraordinary light, I like the way the long focal length and the skylight darkens it just enough to get this spectacular result. I also like the 70-300mm, I get sharp images at 300mm without a tripod, but was less successful at night, even with tripod.

Hi Simon, I just caught up with this one, which I think is excellent. As Janice says, the only weakness is the slant on the beach, which could be easily fixed. The muted colours and the foam/mist of the waves breaking is marvellous. A terrific photo.

Andrew

Simon,
Absolutely stunning shot. The light on this one is quite amazing. Great job in doing justice to this scene under less than ideal conditions. The exposure is great. Even though the surf is washed out, stopping down would have taken away the beautifull light hitting the foreground mountains. The delicate effect on these mountains is what makes this shot.

Hi Simon. Something on a grand scale, elemental and awe-inspiring.Amazing scenery and equally amazing weather conditions, creating the sea spray in the foreground and the wonderful haze in the distance. Definitely one of my favourites. It's a wonder you kept the whole thing horizontal, considering the conditions on board. Cheers, Klaudio

Another mystic shot, simply excellent. The colour shades in the layers of mountains are nice...also the haze things near water..

Great shot under trying conditions! The layering is realy brought out by the long lens and fog, so what would usually become a very two-dimensional image has great depth.

I like it, a very amazing atmosphere!
Composition is great and exposure is perfect in spite of a changing light.
Congratulations.

Hi Simon,
good picture this is. you did quite well to keep the horizon straight while being in a boat. I was too busy throwing up all the time to take many great shots there. The light is good, and the layers of mountains make for very interesting viewing. TFS arnoud
