North New Zealand's Mount Ngauruhoe is familiar with Lord of the Rings fans as Mount Doom. It plays a major role including other scenic New Zealand landscapes.
Maori legend is chief Ngatoro-i-rangi called volcanic fire from his Hawaiki homeland that emerged, creating Ngauruhoe. "Nga uru is the Maori word for hoe - a paddle like staff, the Chief inserted into the ground.
Mount Ngauruhoe is 2,291 meters (7,516') above sea level.

Hello Ray, a very appropriate title for your photo. Those volcanos can spell trouble for civilization. Nice layers of color and shadow in the image.

Great name and what a place! The mountain is framed perfectly to draw attention to its perfect shape. I like the gloomy feeling that these dramatic clouds bring to the scene.

Betcha wish you'd had your 5D with you when you were here. But still, the photo has lasted the test of time. A beautiful mountain, I remember it well from my treks in the South Island. Good colours and post processing to bring it back to life.
Thanks for sharing, have a lovely Sunday

A perfct cone of the snowy top's volcano.
Prominently above the valley you taken from, it was a bit surprise to acknowledge it is high as almost 2300m above sea-level(though of much lower height).
Fine pic. from the other side of our world.

Okay, Ray, I confess that I've picked through your portfolio to find a shot with too much sky, and I have not found even one! The sky here is dramatic, but it serves only to complement the extreme drama of the volcanic peak. What an amazing scene!
