Photographer’s Note
Taken on our first morning of winter here in New Zealand. Around -5
in the bitter chill morning, here you see Lake Taupo looking across to Mounts Tongariro, Nguruhoe and Ruapehu in the distance.
Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in Oceania.
For a dusk version of Lake Taupo see Henk's shot at http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/photo1072158.htm
Hard edge ND grad used to bring more of the purple sky at the top. RAW file conversion. Taken actually at 07:08 in the morning as the time is wrong on the camera info.

hey, look who's back :) glad to see you posting again, Jim, and you certainly open with fireworks :) having spent a week in Utah among red stones these cool blue and purple tones are a welcome relief. I like a lot how the strong horizontal lines add peace and calm to the scene, great shot.
best,
Kristine

Hello Jim,
Welcome back on TE, glad to see you posting again here!
I was there myself 3 weeks ago and understood the magical beauty of this inside sea.
You perfectly captured this early morning mood and the magnificent pink pastel tones in the sky that reflects in the water. The long exposure blurring the water is adding to this mild atmosphere and gives a great image.
Have a great day.
Best regards, Christian

Hi Jim ;-)
Good to have you back man after a long time with brand new material.
Thanks for the link to my picture, but let's not forget to praise yours. The blue and purple toning is wonderful, surreal? So be it, i like it. I never saw it like this, sunset was nice during my stay, sunrise was nothing.
This can't be far from the location where i took mine, those island in the far background i can recall also in my images. The smooth and soft water (thanks to the 4 sec) make it even more surreal...and i like that a lot.
Take care....and thanks for coming back,
Henk

Hi Jim. We most likely passed on the road! I came down through Taupo from Whakatane on Monday. Those clouds were still there at lunchtime when we passed through too. Excellent colours and good handling of light. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Jim,
Great way to let us know....YOU ARE BACK.
wonderful capture, the colour tones are superb.
The 4 sec exposure has worked a treat on the water as well as the background.
Can't believe how sharp the white cloud in the centre of frame is.
Beautiful image.

Hi Jim,
Welcome back, what happen to all the old photos. Just want a fresh start?
Well this is a great start, very stylist and a bit surreal pp, Well sometimes that's what we needed and wanted to see, to escape to a more fantasy like place. As long as it's done tastefully. The image quality is really quiet fantastic, very smooth and high depth. the sofe texture from the exposure really give it that silk like quality and the reflection in the pool so crystal clear to depict just how calm the morning air was. Thanks and welcome back. Have a wonderful day.

Hey Jim,
Good to see you back here! This shot is so beautiful and what strikes me the most are the colours. I like how the blues turn into purple. Great POV with excellent exposure, good light and what an amazing view. Great work, Jim!
Greetings,
Ann
PS: It seems to me you are right and I also think that West Canada and New Zealand have some similarities.

Very interesting shot on the theme of the blue colour, with them coming grey at the bottom and purple in the sky.
Congratulations

Hi Jim,
it is great that you are back! And what a wonderful impression from the beginning of the winter season you have composed here. The cold colors are very attractive and the sharpness is striking. I also like the title. TFS!
Warm regards

Hi Jim,
Amazing colours... The purple compensates a bit for the coldness induced by all that beautiful blue, which is part of the great charm of the photo. I like all that relative emptiness and the sense of peace it conveys.

Hello Jim,
Amazing hues of blue, turning almost pink in the sky!
A very attractive composition, where the mountain range in the background is where my eyes finally go...
Good division of the frame, delicate details!
Greetings,
Pablo -
Nice to see you back! I wondered what happened when you disappeared so suddenly...
