Auckland is renowned for having the best mixture of weather in one day. You can go out in t-shirts and shorts in the morning, only to get cold in the afternoon and by evening time your wet to the bone with the possibility of getting electrocuted by the thunderstorms that do arrive by 8pm.
So here's the best mixture, storm and sun, the storm being east and the sun being west.

...and the good news for photographers are these stormy conditions will thrn even an ordinary place photo into a spectacular image, here the light on the greens is strong to attract attraction and reveal the terrain curves
have a nice day JY

Amazing place, wonderful title. Excellent light and shadow. Fantastic shot.
macondo (19443) 2009-12-05 2:27
I love this kind of light and shadow contrast beneath a stormy sky. The monument makes a great focal point/highlight at the top of the bowl shaped hollow. I wonder if this is Mt Eden - I remember it from my last trip to NZ about 5 years ago.
eversmile (11636) 2009-12-05 2:27
Wow! That's an amazingly dramatic landscape! I love the astounding contrasts and the green freshness of the lawn. The volumes, enhanced by the shadows, are blindingly obvious. Impressive and immediately magnetic... The kind of vision that can cause my passion for a place, like Pokhara in Nepal during the monsoon 22 years ago. I was immediately addicted.
A fantastic work! Congratulations, Jim!!!
PaulVDV (27784) 2009-12-05 2:33
I thought the weather changed fast in my country but apparently not compared to Auckland.
The light on the hill and the column on top is wonderful and creates a day-night contrast with the black sky.
The picture is well composed with those long shadows on the foreground.
Best regards, Paul

Strong pfoto! Beautiful full colours and good light management. The same for contrast and sharpness.
My eyes are drawn to the white tower and the small cloud above because of the curved slope and the shadows.

Hello Jim ,
What a great capture !
The Dark sky and the superb stormy light are superb featutes , of course . But the composition is outstanding . I like a lot these beautiful carpet of grass covering the gentle inclines . And the monument , at a focal point .
Bartleby (13552) 2009-12-05 3:38
the strong contrasts / shadows and this bright green are a treat for the eyes. I wonder what the thing at the top of the hill is...but it makes a fine focal point for the composition.
rikko77 (10861) 2009-12-05 3:42

Very good light management. the white tower and sky and the green grass are looking so good. Thanks for sharing.
BennyV (16353) 2009-12-05 4:49
Four seasons in a shot. It almost looks like a miniature scale model of a landscape. The white beacon is magnificent, as is the overall sharpness of this scene. A wonderful capture. Hats off!

Un écrin de lumière!
C'est superbe, le cadrage est excellent , trés beau contraste, les couleurs sont parfaites, une trés bonne compo...
CLODO (33816) 2009-12-05 9:41
According to your comment, it must be 7PM: the dark clouds are covering the sky, and the sun filters through them as a big spot to illuminate ..... a lighthouse, a rocket, a monument..??
Nice green hues. Suppose that there was a shelter close to this place!!
AROBN54 (11475) 2009-12-05 11:17
Sensational shot, Jim!
The light and color are SO dramatic in it. Brilliant, perfectly saturated color, well composed, outrageously good detail, great depth. I love how that tower is catching the light and the spot of light in the sky right above it. That is a beautiful shot! Many thanks and kindest regards,
adores (44807) 2009-12-05 14:04
What an amazing moment! The light is fantastic, especially with that really dark sky in background. I like the obelisk pointing to that white spot in the sky. It's perfect!
macjake (66492) 2009-12-05 20:25
wonderful landscape, with lush green colours contrasting the powerful grey sky above.
i wonder what happened to you after the shot? did you get soaked by rain?
this is an example of excellent light management
westcoastgirl1 (666) 2009-12-05 20:25
Keep these shots of your beautiful country coming. I used to think Canada was the most beautiful but I think I change my mind :)
You captured the lightness and darkness splendidly here. That sky is so omninous too. Excellent texture and sharpness to this one.
Superb in everyway,
pablominto (53746) 2009-12-05 23:52
A different image with outstanding quality!
The effects of light are stunning on several levels - I mention the strong shadows, the well lit column, the dark and cloudy sky...
The fresh green is an eye-catcher that later takes my eyes to the monument on the hill..!
Angshu (56750) 2009-12-06 0:08
Superb..simply awesome..the play of light and shade. The clouds, very dark are great and the white obelisk standing out. The basin in the Fg bathed in light with the shadows of trees creating a good lead-in. With the rain about to break-in the next moment, I wonder where you did run for cover!
hardyuno (4650) 2009-12-06 1:50
dark clouds and sun from the other side gives very good pictures, i see. Fine colours and exposure. TFS
Have a fine sunday
baba_flies (8829) 2009-12-06 2:07
Hello Jim! I hope you had your rain coat ready and a safe place to hide your camera :))) Beautiful the last sun light on the green before the storm clouds moved over, and I mean no green without a little rain every once in a while, this is the deal, if we like it or not. The sky is really something, scary and fascinating at the same time. Great shot, Jim! Best regards, Barbara.
dkeus31 (27735) 2009-12-06 5:07
wow a great image!
the strong light and this dark sky, that's contrast and saturated colors!
the tower is perfectly placed also
carper (96) 2009-12-06 23:47
fantastic light, good shadow, marvelous balance, fantastic contrast with the dark sky, I like it a lot, have a good day.
benbroug (743) 2009-12-07 7:53
Absolutely an amazing image!!! Fantastic light. I was not so lucky when I was there. It was overcast with a little blue sky.
gunbud (34066) 2009-12-07 19:54
Wonderful bits of rich light filtering through that stormy silver-blue sky down on the hillside that brings out beautiful varying shades of lush green.
The impressive tower enjoys the best of the warm light.
bakes888 (18499) 2009-12-08 1:04
Great photo, excellent light and colours. The dark sky adds drama and menace but the FG lightens the scene beautifully. Nice work and thanks for sharing.
Kielia (24077) 2009-12-08 2:21
excellent photo work, giving me a very good idea of this fascinating New Zealand monument under a very dramatic sky. The colors are fantastic and the light is amazing. TFS!
avene (12675) 2009-12-08 5:45
wo-ooow, Jim, how long did you have to wait for this magic light? absolutely stunning, it feels like the luminous light is pouring like a liquid gold into the valley in a battle with approaching darkness of the shadows and storm clouds. great shot, love it.
Waylim (25496) 2009-12-08 23:15
...But there is more than one tree on this hill :)
I like the dramatic play of light and shadow. Very good contrast, you nearly over expose the lighter area, but not just yet. the rest is really good with texture and details on the glassy field, I like how that monument seem to be like a source that litted up the sky. Very moody and dramtic atmosphere.
delpeoples (57264) 2009-12-09 1:19
Hi Jim, nature is truly amazing that it can give us a sky so moody and black like that and yet at the same time, give brilliant light as in your FG. The tezture of the hill is beautiful and I like the solitary aspect of the monument, it further creates that atmosphere of isolation and wild, dramatic weather. Excellent job, TFS, Lisa
Dashab (2564) 2009-12-11 22:40
What a spectacular image! The clouds could not be thicker and darker! And the light on the slope is so radiant! Good sharpness throughout the shot and an interesting detail in the form of that spaceship ready for launch.
TFS and have a nice weekend,
mafegan (8624) 2009-12-19 14:43
What a dramatic scene with the pitch black clouds and just a patch of white cloud directly above the obelisk. The strong light below can't have lasted long. Pity about the one tree. Tfs, Marlene
darek1978 (13361) 2009-12-21 12:59
What a unique landscape. Light and contrast make this one really stand out. The grey clouds are nice and really impressive and what is great here, is the play with lights and shadows. Well done!
Thanks for sharing,
Miha2ou7 (5162) 2009-12-22 12:09
Hey Jim, havent seen you for quite some time, great to see you now.
A beautiful photo, from the technical as well as thematic side. Great sharpness and clarity, the same goes for the colors, the game of light and shadows really puts the drama into the picture. Well, almost as much as the stormy skies. Great work.
ManuMay (36097) 2009-12-22 23:16
Great one! Colours and shadows play is really amazing under this superbly grey sky!! Very good light moment and good textures play...
Have a nice day...
danos (96009) 2009-12-28 1:06
really impressive your shot from Auckland, with this brilliant light to floodlight the foreground and to contrast perfect with the grey sky and the dark shades of the trees. The obelisk monument is the eye catcher of the scene.Informative your note too. Well done.

Sistercosmo (242) 2010-01-05 13:44
great light and mood in this shot. Fabulous detail in the grass and trees. And that sky with the light on top of the monument - like a big dot on an i. :)
Take good care,
