Photographer’s Note
The old capital of Fiji, Levuka, is where my grandfather was born. His father was one of the first photographers in the South Pacific. One of the photos of Levuka taken by my great-grandfather (Alfred Dufty) or his brother Frank is currently in an exhibition at the Australian National Gallery in Canberra. In 1997 I stayed in Levuka for a week and tried to re-create some of my great-grandfather's photos.
One of those photos was of this scene taken in 1880 from Gun Rock overlooking the original Levuka village. (Scanned from a negative).
Given that we are not meant to upload photos taken by someone else I've uploaded the original photo as a workshop so that you can see what it looked like in 1880.
Levuka then was a major trading, whaling and re-supply port for the south Pacific with many pubs. You'll notice a big difference in the type of boats visiting Levuka - these days it is mainly pleasure boast except for the occasional ship collecting tuna from the canning factory at the top of the photo.

Hey Ian,
Fine job! The high POV lets you capture all the natural splendor of what is in view. And it`s really amazing and beautiful. The nature here is really gorgeous.
Also thanks for the note and the very interesting WS, a great photo of course. It`s a joy to look at it. All those "ancient" ships and barges in the harbor .. British probably? Some East India branch maybe .. :) really amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.

Hi Ian,
Very interesting project, unique for TE from what I have seen. Amazing to go to the same vantage point and shoot an image over one hundred years after you grandfather. The difference isn't as great as one would think, obviously the boats have changed but the dynamics of the port haven't altered that much. They sure built a strong corrugated roofed building in the foreground, one can only imagine the cyclones that that has endured over the years.
Brilliant stuff Ian, the true meaning of TE in these two remarkable shots.
Fantastic, well done and thanks for sharing.
Regards
Peter
