Photographer’s Note

I always hate my vacation photos when I get home. It seems like it takes 6-12 months to start thinking they aren't all that bad. Anyway:

This is South Sea Island, a quick day trip out of Nadi. It's a beautiful, serene place -- except that the tour outfitters make it their daily quest to see how many bored tourists they can stack on top of the place. It was amazing to see how many of the tourists seemed to have no concept of "sun screen" and I can only imagine the blistering that took place the next day. Yikes.

The island is only about a hundred yards at its longest, so it doesn't take long to get a sense of the place and I found myself feeling trapped and restless pretty quickly. Of course, I don't really know how to relax. Everyone else there -- especially the sun burned -- seemed to have adapted much better to the environment.

I like the colors in the shot and without being able to see more than a few people in it, I have to admit that from this distance it looks like paradise.
