Self-service, Fijian style: old-fashioned petrol pump near Momi Bay, Queen's Road, Viti Levu, Fiji.
Ann (annjackman) recently posted an image of old petrol pumps shot in the Midwest and I threatened to reciprocate, as her photograph jogged my memory of one I made years ago in Fiji. So here is my reply, or homage to Ann.
The pump was still operational, and indeed was on the main road around the south of the island between Nadi and Suva. I liked the bucolic setting, which seemed faintly incongruous.

I'm sure that Ann will love this one when she sees it - the colours of this old petrol pump are not dissimilar to the colours of the pumps which she showed in her recent picture from "Route 66".
As you say, it does look slightly out of place in this very rural environment but the backdrop of lovely bright red flowers, open countryside and a gorgeous sky set it off perfectly.
Lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

I think that we here 65 year have to go back for this type petrol pump.
But this is very well taken and lovely sharp and clear image.
We get also a very nice background with flowers.
Excellent composition, nice presentation too.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice Sunday,

that's the most picturesque gas station I've ever seen:) Hard to believe it's operational, the place looks like it's the middle of nowhere. But if it does work then the flowery setting gives the impression that the gas you'll find in this self-service marvel is for free:)
Thanks and enjoy the summer!

Well this is the most unique petrol pump I have ever seen! It certainly seems located in a strange place as if its in someone's garden! Not like the smelly soulless garage forecourts we get here!

I haven't seen a pump like this one. I love the rural setting. Great quality scan with lovely colours. I must say that on the Route 66 trip I got 'gas pump' overload but really nice to see this unusual one. It seems the pump is just hooked over what looks no more than a stick in the ground.
I have always wanted to visit Fiji but had rather bad press recently.
Thanks so much for posting this one.
Best wishes, Ann

this is a very lovely and interesting picture that combines superbly a simple composition with a full frame. I like very much the slight perspective, the stature and the off-centre position of the old petrol pump; you've rendered it as attractive as possible. Its textures and details are eye catching and it looks like a protagonist in a story set up by the context, the soft light and the sense of desolation. The colour management is superb. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Hello Will, many years ago now we had two petrol pumps in the village that were operated by hand, but I`ve never seen this model before!
I love the way that it appears to be set in someones garden with the flowers being most attractive, very well spotted,it`s a lovely nicely composed shot with just that bit of something different.
All the best Les.
