Delightful old Levuka was the first capital of Fiji but ceased being the capital in 1882. The town is full of timber buildings with the main street made up of old clap board shops. Levuka is currently going through the processes for World heritage listing.
It is a laid back corner of Fiji without white beaches but with lots of history (sandal wood, whaling, beche la mer, tuna fishing and in its hey day lots of drunkenness). It is said that ships captains found there way through the reef by following the floating bottles.
2 of my grandparents were born in Fiji with my great grandfather being one of 4 brothers who were photographers in Levuka and around the pacific, hence my particular interest in the town.
