Photographer's Note

Another old film photo scan.

This is Moonlight Head, along Victoria's Great Ocean Road. Just down the road from the famous 12 Apostles, this lovely spot is virtually unknown. And even less so the amethyst stones that give this place its name.

They're found on just one small part of the beach. When held up against the sun, just enough light shines through to make it appear as though you're looking at the moon.

The plank of wood resting on the stones is just as I found it. For a second, my imagination almost had me wondering if one of Lovecraft's mythical sea creatures had created it for the ritual worship of some aeons-old, aquatic deity.

The gloomy grey sky really gave the whole place an eerie, primordial atmosphere.

From memory, I think I used a graduated filter for this shot, which is why the cliffs are so black.
