Photographer’s Note

Another shot from our trek through the Sydney Harbour foreshore national park.
This shot was taken looking South East through Sydney Heads with Crater Cove in the foreground. I’m not sure if the NSW Government Dept of Transport has this much insight, but the departure and arrival times for Sydney ferries is timed in such a way, that the ferries pass each other in the middle of the heads on each trip. Certainly makes for more interesting photographs for tourists and locals alike.
The other interesting element in this shot is Crater Cove. Crater Cove is home to quite a large squatter population, bit hard to see in such a wide shot but along the foreshore and up in the cliffs squatters have built some pretty reasonable shacks. From time to time the authorities try to evict them, but, you guessed it, the next day they’re back. They catch a lot of their food straight from the Harbour and at the top of the cliff, where I took the shot from, there are sporting fields equipped with toilets, running water and hot showers. Anywhere else around the Harbour, foreshore land like this would start at a minimum of ten million dollars ($10,000,000.00) a block. These men and women get to live here for free. No rates, no taxes, dole cheque, care of the Government, every Thursday…..Hmmm, where did I go wrong.
