I found these disused gantry cranes whilst exploring the Port Adelaide Wharves, a place I used to go to fish as a child. Then I can remember them always active, loading and unloading cargo from ships.

I spotted them today on the horizon, and felt an urge to find them again. Now they are disused, and slowly rusting away by the side of the dock. No doubt the are now destined for the scrap heap.

The Port River and Docks area of Port Adelaide has changed a great deal since then. Very few ships now come to the Port, and with the construction of a new bridge now across the Port River the sea faring days of "The Port" are now pretty much over. These two gantry cranes (at least to me) symbolize that.

However, the areas immediately around the wharves on the Port River now are enjoying a new lease of life. Old historical buildings from as early as the 1860's have been restored, and there is a resurgence in the residential land use in the area. But the Port is changing, and it will never again be as I remember it as a child....

This shot was taken in overcast conditions. I have converted the image to greyscale: it just seemed to convey the age and decay of these cranes better.

Bonjour Mark,
Jolie prise sur ces deux grues qui ne fonctionnerons plus.
Beau format en N/B bien vus.
Bravo.
Amitiés,
Rosa.

Hi Mark, Good choice BW for these dinosaurs, I think as you stated it captured that old decaying look. Good definition & they contrast well against the grey sky.
Take care
Santo
