Photographer’s Note

This is the Art gallery of the State of New South Wales ,as seen from Sydney's Hyde park. It stands as a monument to Australia's British heritage. At the end of the 19th century, the expanding commonwealth wanted to have institutions that resembled those in the 'mother country' This grand gallery resembles the national Gallery in London and was completed in 1887. It was intended to show this new nation as a center of European art and culture. Many painting were bought from Europe,at this time, mostly of artists working at the end of the 19th century. Over the years the gallery has acquired a good collection of Australian art works, including aboriginal works, as well.
