This was taken several hours after my previous post, on a different day, in almost the exact position.
It is a long story but my daughter has inherited my D80 & I had an offer to good to refuse to purchase a D200, I now have a new toy.
These light poles have a long point on them above the lights, If someone out there knows what they are there for please let me know.
My wife said they are there to keep the birds off but I don't believe her.

Excellent nightscape. Good detail and good use of available light.
Serge

Very nice colours on a quite different view of Melbourne. The f10 worked very well giving good lines on both sides of the highway. The long poles could well be to keep the birds away as here where I live they also have done a similar thing to avoid the pelicans landing on the lights.
Antonio

Hello Santo,

I love this image because of the city view at this time of the evening. The diagonal of the road and the fast moving cars make for a dynamic foreground. I have picture very similar to this one somewhere in my gallery. I do have to agree with you wife regarding the light poles as birds sometimes create nest above them. Cheers :-)

Roberto

Good, clean image. Well compsed and well executed. Just enough light left in the sky to make this work.

PHIL

Hi Santo,

I live about 1km from this spot and know it well. I oftern cycle past it on Yarra Boulevard. I have also tried taking photos of the city, but from the top of the hill rather than this spot, without results which were close to as good as this.

I doubt that the spikes are to keep birds off, as there aren't that many around here, just a few minahs and lorikeets. My bet is that they are lightning conductors.

Cheers, Steve

Hi Santo!
Your photo is nice, especially considering the light condition. Beside that, you should try to avoid the halo - effect due to your dynamic range increase. This you can achieve by using a better fade value.
Cheers, Leonidas

Hello Santo,
Oh! This is a real good one!
perfect pov with awesome lighting and colour in this cityscape!
the f/10 do you a good job well
very well done
cheers
Tony

Hey Santo!

I see you like hanging around the highway. :>
No, seriously, beautiful work, with the perfect exposition, it fits both the FG and the BG, the sky is exceptional and the POV is perfect. Congrats on your new camera. Regarding the lights, who knows, maybe an alien landing ground? Ha. Nice work.

Regards.

Santo

I really like this shot. The sky effect and the headlights of the moving cars create a mesmerising picture. Half your luck to move into a D200 (I still havent mastered many finer points of my D80)

Hello Santo,
I 'm delighted with this picture.Fantastic lights and excellent point of view.Really a very good work.

maria

Hello Santo,
Light plays an important role in this picture: the little remaining natural light between the clouds, the light sparkling like distant stars from the lamppoles and the long red and yellow traces of the cars. Not to forget the hundreds of tiny dots of light from the buildings and the artificially lit street signs.
A well composed and interesting picture.
Gert

Hi Santo.

Excellent exposure to get this lovely effect. The only pity is that horrible lights but what can we do? Nothing.

Rgs, Oscar

Hi Santo

There seems to be a lot of good night shots off Melbourne and this one is no different.
The taillights and front headlights are fantastic coupled with the bright vibrant green road signs. Subtle blue sky and he buildings add to interesting POV.
Well done
Jim

Bonsoir,

Hello Santo,
Great long shutter speed photo! I like that beautiful sky and the effects of moving cars. The colours of this photo are also good.
And I guess those long points of the light poles are lightning conductors.

Best wishes,
Eino

Hello Santo,

What a late evening shot with the red lights and white lights in the other direction, very spetacular.
F/10 and tripod care for excellent composition, good perspective and excellent depth.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice weekend,
John.

Ciao Santo,
Ciao e buona settimana.
Paolo.

Hey there,
Looks like twilight... the colors are nice in the sky while it still feels dark and perfect for that slow shutter photography.
The light streams are so strong!
What an effect.

Hello Santo,

Another great shot of the best Australian city at dusk. Perfect sharpness, superb lines of head and tail lights of passing vehicles. As for the pointed structure on the lamp poles, I believe it may be just a design feature, since without it the lamp pole can also as as a conductor.

Excellent work my friend

Regards
Alfred

Hi Santo - this is a GREAT photo!!
The lamp posts look like skinny needles!! I have to agree with your wife's theory on the birds.
I like the timing of the photo - looks like twilight, hence the dramatic sky.
All in all, great composition - well done!

Hello santo. Also this photo is again somewhat special. With beginning of the dawn everything becomes with artificial light illuminates. Thus develops a special tendency, which has also psychologically effect on us. And finally also the long and smeared traces of the moved lights (head light and backlight) of the cars develop. The photo is skillfully realized and worth seeing. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Goodnight Santo,
Similar to your "Express to melbourne", but much more sharpened. The two streams of light contrast beautifully against the enligthened city and the astonishing blue sky. Beautiful landscape! :)

Hi Santo, I like this one, a lot. This is a shot I really have to try to do myself. I love a shot like this with the light blur. Exposure is very good and I like the blue you captured over the city. I think the long points are there to keep the birds off, haha, just kidding, but who am I to argue with a wife. Nice camera.

Thanks, John

Very effectful this blue hour setting from Melbourne Santo. The long shutter makes for some interesting effects from the bypassing cars. Good idea and an interesting result.

Hi Santo,
Wonderful slow exposure shot with clear focus and beautiful lines from the lights. The reddish foreground is beautifully complimented by the blue sky and silver blue sky scrappers. Extraordinary urban capture.
