[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Yesterday a young friend from France told me that when he went to the St Kilda and Port Melbourne area of Melbourne he thought it 'was some kind of Miami place' because of all the palm trees. In the strong sunshine of a Spring day last year, one could be forgiven for thinking one was in the sub-tropics.

From the promenade at the new housing development in Port Melbourne, I took this photo of Station Pier, Melbourne's passenger ship terminal. Behind me are new streets and houses that all look the same - does anyone remember that Pete Seeger song from the 1960s about 'little boxes... made of ticky tacky'? These are big boxes. A few people were walking along the promenade, but the streets behind seemed devoid of life.

Anyway, this is Station Pier, first built in 1854, only 20 years after Melbourne began its existence, and in the middle of the great gold rush that saw Melbourne become the fastest growing city in the world during the early 1850s. Originally this area was called Sandridge, and the pier was known as Railway Pier. The railway line connecting it with the centre of the city, 5 kilometres away, was the first important railway in Australia.

The pier was rebuilt early in the 20th century to accommodate longer passenger vessels, and today it can berth even the world's biggest ships, as my friend Klaudio's photo of the Queen Victoria shows. This pier holds great symbolic and sentimental importance for so many migrants who came to this country from Europe in the post-war period, principally from Italy and Greece, and the British Isles.

The lighthouse is one of the two Port Melbourne lighthouses, built in 1924. The other of the pair is 600 metres inland, preserved as part of the Beacon Cove housing estate.

hello Andrew,
I like a lot the dark blue of the sky, I find it works really well to bring out the white ship and lighthouse, it's a great contrast. smart composition too with the palm trees in the foreground looking larger than life, I like a lot how the strong vertical lines - the palms, the lighthouse, the street light - create a nice uplifting feeling. besides, the orange jacket the woman is wearing add an interesting colour accent. excellent photo and very informative note, thanks :)

with best regards,
Kristine

Wow deep blue of the sky, i really like this saturation, so cooool!
Blue, green, and white that everyone welcomes are depicted very well in the strong sunshine, especially the depiction of white is superb.
Regards, Hisashi

Hej Andrew
Such charactairs! twin Palm, it's like they would suddenly start talking to each other like other elderly peolple that been living side by side for a long time.
cheers
Anders

Hello Andrew, I never got down quite this far when I was in St. Kilda, but I saw the great sky with those Palms, and I'm not sure how close this is to where the "Spirit of Tasmania" docks, but I got a photo of it. If I can get back to Melbourne I will need to check this area out better. This is probably how I'll always remember Melbourne skies, always blue and bright, with some great white clouds just to add character. Those Palms (and the lamp) are another feature to me that is a part of the area. I like the way you've composed this with the emphasis on the sky, giving some head room to the trees. The ocean colour is awesome and in this case contrasts very nicely with the sky. The ship and lighthouse tie in with the clouds, and you found a woman (in orange this time) to walk across between the Palms, to add that one bit of different colour that really gives the shot a boost.

Thanks, John

Hi Andrew,
Great light, sharpness, beautifil colours. Your pictures from this part of the world show us a quite different nature, even the sky isn't the same.
Cheers
Marc

Hello Andrew,
this is clear, warm, sharp and well composed with the two palm trees and the lamp taking all ideas of any symmetry away. An impression of holiday in my eyes.

hi andrew,
Simple shot, but very well done! The colour and clarity is very good, allowing us to see everything so clearly that it's almost like being there.

Hi Andrew

Good placement of the white lighthouse, with excellent symmetry provided by the 2 palm trees. Good color & framing. Tfs!

Bonjour Andrew,
il fallait des lumières exceptionnelles pour se permettre cette exposition moins forte qui dégage mieux couleurs et contrastes.
La cadrage est parfait, la vue séduisante.
Une invitation.
Regards.
Daniel.

Hello Andrew.
I see you like the polarizer..
This picture is well composed, with the two palms at the 2/3 of shot. It seems just a little bit underexposed (1/3 stop) but is a question of taste.
Best regards. Bobo.

Hi Andrew,
Wonderful crisp details and superb sharpness. The colors, the blue of the sky and sea, the well defined clouds look absolutely superb.
Best regards. Salvator.

This is an aspect of Melbourne that I have missed,Andrew. I am glad to see it presented here. I will make a point of visiting the waterfront area, next time I am in Victoria. You have a lovely , deep blues sky and a very strong, still composition. regards kevin

Hello Andrew,
A nicely balanced composition; I like the contrast between the repeating vehicles in the foreground and the horizontal lines of the ships. The lady walking past in the red touch is a nice touch; whilst the sky makes for a very pleasing atmosphere. Excellent sharpness complemented by good colours. Interesting history in your note.

Hello Andrew,

I usually love your photographs and admire so much of what you do but this doesn't do a lot for me. The photograph is sharp, the colours and the light are great, the subjct is fine ... it is something about the balance.

I hope you will forgive me but I have messed about with it in Photo Shop and actually like this view better. I have not put your border back on just because I wasn't criticising the border.
I feel bad about this because you are a far better photographer than me but I didn't feel I could be dishonest!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Andrew,
Excellent setting that inserts the elements as the ships and the beacon between the palms and the lamppost, with a good graphism.
The blue sky is impressive, very beautiful with the white clouds, and with a light and a few magnificent colors, thanks to a good use of the polarizer.
It is a very beautiful photo. I like.
Best regards,
Josep

Bonsoir Andrew,
J'apprécie la finesse de tes images notamment dans celle-ci. La composition est intéressante, mais peut-être qu'un seul palmier aurait pu être cadré. Le ciel limpide et le polarisant apportent beaucoup au spectacle que tu nous présentes.
Excellente semaine.
Pierre

The polariser has played its part well on the sky bringing out some wonderful detail in the clouds. The light is really glittering on the palm. You have carefully framed the image to place objects from the background between the vertical elements in the scene. In some ways the lamp and, to a lesser extent, the lighthouse seem to spoil the balance, but you can't crop them without chopping off part of the palm. The people in the scene are perfectly placed with lots of space in front of them to walk into. well done
Kath

Bonjour Andrew,

c'est une belle experience avec le polarizer, qui m'attire de plus en plus. L'effet sur le ciel est formidable. Le sujet est romantique. J'aime bien la photo.

Best regards for you and yours,

Branko

Hello Andrew, I like this scene not only for it's colour, detail & clarity but also because it brings back many fond memories. Fremantle was the first time I saw Australian land & then after 30 days at sea the warm welcome of Station Pier, as a child & later as an adult I spent many hours fishing off the this Pier. A lovely shot. Thanks for the memories
Santo

Hi Andrew, splendid perspective with fascinating great trees, superb light and fantastic colors, very well done, ciao Silvio

Wonderful shot, Andrew.
Immaculate clarity, and a management of light & color that qualifies as absolutely top notch.
I love deep blue skies, so... here I'm definitely in my element!
TFS my friend, you have a great day.
I'll see you around,
Fulvio.

Hi Andrew, I agree the area dose look very tropical with the palms & vivid blue sky, I love your use of the palms to frame the ships in the background, wonderfully composed & a warm & welcoming picture, kind regards Wilson.

The best feature of this pleasurable composition are: a deep blue sky with cotton white clouds, the two palm trees that frame the ship and the lamp to the right. A very good sharpness and contrast add value. So... no wonder one likes it so much!
Compliments,
Donato
