[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Canoe Pool is a large shallow pool built for kids. It has a sandy beach area, with protected shallow water. It is situated just in front of the Newcastle Ocean Baths, on Newcastle beach.

It was completed in 1937 “for tinies”. On the bottom was featured a map of the world in pigmented cement. In the ‘60s problems with sea lice and dirty water prompted calls for the pool to be closed. In 1968 storms demolished the pool’s map. A feasibility study in 1997 to restore the map was considered by the council of the time to be too expensive. It remains as is, one of the few standalone ocean pools created specifically for children’s use, though as you can see in the shot, others do use it.

I first saw this pool from bluffs over Newcastle beach (please see workshop), so it was just a matter of getting down to it to get the shot. Fitting the shot in was a little problematic, with various obstructions, and actually fitting it. In the end I decided on this position with this composition, with my zoom wide open to capture the pool and the one end of the bath house. The light standard is just about centre in the shot, but my feeling was that people would look first at the pool, then see the light standard, and hopefully see it as being somewhat offset from the centre of the pool. Workflow for this shot was as follows:
Shot taken in Raw with JPG reference – (ISO 250 17mm @f11, 1/250)
NEF files adjusted for exposure, shadow, vignetting, brightness and contrast
Levels – not used
Curves – S-curve for contrast
Added saturation layer +20 to master
Saved as a tiff
Resized, selected on sky and selectively reduced noise, inversed the selection, added a layer for sharpening with USM, modified sharpening with a layer mask (50% opacity black brush), framed and saved as a jpeg

Hi John,
Nice view you got here, it a very pleasing one. I like the curvature of the canoe, a closer view may also be a good choice. Your PP note is very detailed, i like it.

hi neighbour. It looks as we are both smelling the sea air.The composition is fine, actually the standard fits nicely with the overall elegant, linear nature of the scene.the light is beautifully handled and gives a rich tonality to sand and stone. regards. Klaudio.

Curiously, I have been twice to Sydney, travelling by road from Brisbane and never stopped in Newcastle. I have the idea of an industrial town with a big coal port facility.
Thanks for showing me that coal export is not the only thing happening in Newcastle. Your photo is nice even if that lamp pole is right in the center!

Hi John
You have a nice diagonal line in the railing leading the eye into the image and around the pool. Good PP. The exposure is spot on.

Hi John. I never really noticed the light till I read your note but looking again and longer it ties in well with the next light down to lead the eye to the bathhouse. Good colours and smooth noise free sky give this shot good clarity. Well composed and thanks for sharing.

Hi John,

The point of view leads our eyes to the horizon. The lamposts and the building are framing the Canoe pool. The presence of people has an effect of scale. The light brings out the beauty of the colors. have a nice day.

Hello John,
A very nice view, clarity, light and detail excellent, nice tones of sand & stones separated by white hand rail, I didn't notice the light at first, I was looking at the path leading to the bathhouse , water & sky where they meet, The pool and what may be a fence around it, people & the light pole ? I don't have a problem with it. :-).

Hi John,
Could you explain to me in a little more detail how you adjust your saturation, 'cause this is really brilliant. I am really poor with photoshop, I might need an "idiot guide" or something. It would be really helpful.

Hi John,

Great composition and perspective. The deep sky adds a lot to the picture, suggesting a nice day on the beach. The light is perfect with the shadow patters on the ground completing very well the compo.
