This is my first attempt of a blue hour shot. Actually two, as you can see another shot in WS. They were separated in time by just 10 minutes. The photos were taken from South Perth, across the Swan River. As this is a North-South view the sun had set, approximately 15 minutes before, to the left of the buildings. By the way, please let me know which one you do like better.

Perth, the capital largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia was founded on 11 June 1892 by Captain James Stirling as the political centre of the free settler Swan River Colony and has continued to serve as the seat of Government for WA to the present day.

The naming of the city is attributed to Captain Stirling and it is quite clear that he had already selected the name Perth for the capital well before the town was proclaimed, as his proclamation of the colony, read in Fremantle on 18 June, ended "given under my hand and Seal at Perth this 18th Day of June 1829. James Stirling Lieutenant Governor". The only information on the source of the name comes from Fremantle's diary entry for 12 August, which records that they "named the Town Perth according to the wishes of Sir George Murray". Murray was born in Perth, Scotland, and was in 1829 Secretary of State for the Colonies and Member for Perthshire in the British House of Commons. It is therefore often asserted that the name was given in Murray's honour.
Before European settlement the area had been inhabited by the Whadjuk Noongar people for over 40,000 years, as evidenced by archaeological findings on the Upper Swan River. These Aborigines occupied the southwest corner of Western Australia, living as hunter-gatherers. The lakes on the coastal plain were particularly important to them, providing both spiritual and physical sustenance.
The area where Perth now stands was called Boorloo by the Aboriginals living there at the time of their first contact with Europeans in 1827. Boorloo formed part of Mooro, the tribal lands of the Yellagonga, one of several groups based around the Swan River and known collectively as the Whadjuk. The Whadjuk were part of a larger group of thirteen or more tribes which formed the south west socio-linguistic block known as the Noongar (The People), also sometimes called the Bibbulmun.
With a population estimated at 1.5 million people (2007 census), Perth is one of the most isolated metropolitan areas on Earth. The nearest city to Perth with a population over 1 million is Adelaide in South Australia, which is 2,104 kilometres away. Perth is geographically closer to East Timor and Jakarta, Indonesia, than it is to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.

Hello Antonio
fantastic shot at the blue hour with wonderful colors. The lights and the reflections on the water are really superb. Excellent sharpness and details too. Splendid!

Antoine

th nblue hour and such great view.always wanted something similar in my gallery :)
thanks sharing ,great capture

Hi Antonio
For a first one, it's a really good one ! And you are right, I prefer this one. The WS one is too dark
Nice POV and good framing.
Nest time, close your diaph to f/11
You'll see it would be better.. and no problem with the tripod.. ;-)
Alain

Lovely blue !!! Very interesting and nice night photo. I like the night colours. Good composition.

Hi Antonio, very nice blue hour shot(s) of Perth. Speaking first of the original, I like your composition on this one, with the city placed low to accentuate the blue sky with those clouds. Exposure is good, with the predominant colour of course being blue. I found it interesting, with your distance that you were able to shoot at f/2.8, yet the city is still in good focus. If you had been closer you would of course have had to use a smaller aperture. The clouds deserted you in the second shot, and your city is a little higher in the frame. I don't know if that was a conscious decision or not, but it made sense. You also have more room on the water to display the great reflected colour from the lights of the city. I think your selection of original and the workshop copy was the appropriate one. The first one, to me, had the better sky and city, with a bit tighter crop on the city. The second one though has some awesome reflection in that water. Enjoyed both, and excellent notes.

Thanks, John

Hello Antonio,
Never bene to Perth, but the view is awesome. But seeing the WS it's even better than this one. The colours and reflection in the water is simply stunning and superb exposed. Your pov here is well choosen and gives a beautiful view on the city. Great work and a extra point for the WS..!!!
Regards, Henk

A postcard perfect shot, Antonio. A good friend of mine is from Perth (lives in Belgium), I'll forward it to him and make him homesick !-)

Thanks for the interesting addition in the WS. I love the clouds in the main picture. A good choice!

Hello Antonio,

I like the POV and the different kinds of blue.

Great blue hour shot. The coloured reflections in the see are amazing. Great job.

Ola Antonio,
The Pov and the skyline are great, so it's a good start. The only issue is with aperture/exposure, since you have a tripod and a good lens close your lens to f/16 or beyond, aperture priority and let the 30D gather light all this time, go and have a VB, when you come back the box is full of pixels. Don't forget to use the timer to reduce vibration when releasing the shutter.
Have a nice day JY

Hello Antonio,

I believe you did an excellent job with this blue hour shot. The colour of the sky is very attractive and the skyline of the city is just amazing under the light conditions. Nice saturation and sharpness with the reflections adding that extra special touch to the view. Cheers :-)

Roberto

Hi Antonio, south perth is a great place to see the City of Perth. I think both shots have their own merits. I have also found that the best time to take a city shot is at dusk, when the sky is still a little bright to contrast against the city skyline

I would prefer the WS version where the colours and lights are fantastically displayed. I can see that you have included more of the water in the WS for obvious reason. Although without the clouds, the gradation of colour in the sky is really nice.

I can understand your rationale for using ISO 100 to achieve a noiseless photo, but I am not sure why you have chosen f/2.8 and f/3.2 respectively. Could this be reason that the buildings in the original version seems to be a little blur or is it due to compression? I used f/9 for my Melbourne shot to give a greater DOF. Well, my eyesight could be wrong, Antonio.

I always enjoy viewing your postings.

TFS

Hola Antonio,

Hello Antonio,
Magnificent image with, of course, a great light and colors. I like the composition and how you placed the horizon very low and centered the 2 higher buildings. The reflections on the 2nd shot are attractive but I prefer the softness of this one.
I don't understand very well why you used a 2.8 exposure because using a higher exposure would have increased the overall quality and you mention that you had a tripod ?
Have a nice day.

Hi Antonio

Good sharpness & reflections. I like the blue monochromatic colour of the sky & water, contrasting against the yellow city lights. Tfs!

Filipe

hello Antonio

Interesting angle to get the city skyline across the water. And I see you used CPL for reflections? The sky appears bluish. I wonder the reason you apply f/2.8 and not f/8 above, because the building blur is quite obvious.

Lovely blue hour shot of which is for me the second prettiest city in Australia; after Melbourne of course ;-)
I like those purple reflections and how the grey clouds give life to the sky.

Hello Antonio,
Even before reading you very good text I was thinking about the isolation of Perth and what I see here is incredible a great city with skyline of New York or another great metropolis. You have taken an excellent shot from far, creating thus no distortions and providing nice reflections. Add the blue hour timing, and you've got an instant winner.
All the best - Izzet

Hi Antonio,
I haven't been to Perth yet but a lot of my friends tells me it is a beautiful city ... this is photo somehow proves their comments. It looks quite a big city ... wonderfully captured. The lights gives the impression that it is a vibrant city. Well composed and presented! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Josep

Hi Antonio, fascinating urban view with splendid reflections, superb colors and wonderful light, great composition, very well done, ciao Silvio

Gil

I prefer the original because the busy sky justifies the generous amount of sky, but the WS has more attractive contrast and colorful reflections, a bit of sharpness is lacking on the fg, probably because of the aperture explainedin the comments before.

antonio

ola Antonio,
From the thumbnail, I liked the PP post better but the brighter relection makes the WS very nice also. However, I the end, the more interesting sky in the PP makes me agree with your choice.
SAA, Pat

Hi Antonio,

Welcome in the magic world of blue hour. I'm sure you were very excited when you first saw the result on your LCD screen.

As a first attempt, I have to say that it looks terrific. I can only confirm what PixelTerror have told you, concerning smaller aperture, steady tripod, self timer or shutter release and a good VB. I might even add that for the ultimate result, in terms of sharpness, you should use a custom function in your menu called "Mirror Lock-Up". This will help avoid undesirable vibrations, slightly blurring the shot.

Even if you were on a concrete path, when you press the shutter with your finger, you will necessarily shake the camera, so that's probably why your image is not totally sharp. Also, a long exposure at f/16 will provide an "icy" effect with the water, which complement perfectly this kind of slick shot. You will also obtain "stars" around lampposts, which is possible only with small aperture.

I'm sure it will not be your last experiment and I'm looking forward to see further blue hour pix.

Cheers!

André

Ola Amigo Antonio

Hello Antonio

First attempt for a blue hour, but the result it`s very good.
You have managed the exposure settings to have a beautiful blue sky and a good composition.
Nice shot and reflections on the river surface.Nice panorama over Perth.
