Photographer’s Note

The Southern Cross is part of the Australian flag and at times seen as a symbol of rebellion against authority. It was first used on the Eureka flag when miners in the Victorian gold-fields rebelled against local officialdom and harassment by the police in 1854, they built a stockade in the gold-fields as a symbol of their defiance and — there for the first time — flew the Eureka flag, also known as the Flag of the Southern Cross.

The flag itself is believed to be the handiwork of a Canadian. The five white stars on the flag are said to represent the Southern Cross constellation visible in the skies of the southern hemisphere.

The white cross joining the stars are said to represent unity in defiance, with the blue background representing the blue shirts of the diggers.

Australia, Brazil, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Niue & New Zeland today have the Southern Cross on their National Flag.

This young lady was proudly flying the flag of defiance for everyone to see at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

I asked If I could take a shot of her Southern Cross and she happily complied
