For those who have been to St. Kilda, near Melbourne, the St. Kilda Kiosk at the end of the Pier, is probably the best visual memory or landmark they have of the place. For those who live in Melbourne or St. Kilda, it is a special place as well.

It was first built in 1903. It was the first European-style pier pavilion in Australia. Until the 1930’s it was known as Parer’s Pavilion. In the 30’s the Kirby’s took over and it became known as Kirby’s Kiosk. It was famous as a place to get ice cream (and even illegal beer for a little while). During the Second World War it was a dance venue for American soldiers. There were a lot of romances, supported with trips to the kiosk.

In 2003 it burnt down. The community as a whole was in shock (see workshop). As a symbol of St. Kilda, it was decided it had to be re-built. This was done to the original 1903 plans, with a small restaurant added to the rear. I had breakfast there, it’s a great spot to eat and relax. And when you’re done eating, check the break water around the back. There might be a small surprise waiting for you.

Workflow for this shot was as follows:
Shot was taken in Raw, with a jpeg for reference (ISO 400 65 mm @f/16, 1/1000)
NEF file adjusted for exposure, shadow and vignetting
Levels – white points adjusted, then tweaked by eye
Adjusted curves – applied some contrast on RGB – slight s-curve
Added an overlay layer and dodged and burned with 5-20% opacity black and white brush
Added saturation layer +18 to master
Saved as a tiff
Cropped, resized, reduced noise on sky selection, added a layer, inversed selection, sharpened with USM, modified sharpening with a layer mask (30-80% opacity black brush), framed and saved as a jpeg

Hi John!
The quality of this shot is excellent, with beautiful colours and perfect sharpness. The lights and contrasts are very nice. It is just a little bit tight to the left. Anyway, a very nice shot.
Regards,
Zeca

Three photos about the same place, all different but yet all three very beautiful. The main posting is really superb in sharpness, colour and POV. Excellent work.

Hi John,
I love the fact that you give a detailed workflow of your shot. I actually studied it quite closely to understand how your shots are so sharp! It is quite an incredible shot.
Well done,
shaeri

Hi John, Great sharpness, light & nicely composed, your POV with the walkway leading to the Kiosk (a word I have never heard before) was well chosen, I love the position of the lamp &, as Zeca says, this is a quality photo, kind regards Wilson.

Hi John!
Good colors, lights and composition.
I like the way you show this place. Well captured.

Best wishes,
Eino

Hi John,
This has quite special architectural style, mixing triangular and round forms. Certainly worth rebuilding. Head-on PoV works well this time. Light is strong but you got it tamed.
Kari

Hi John,
Amazing sharpness and detail, you have captured and presented this well known landmark well. I fished on that pier many times as a youngster. The biggest fish are always the ones that get away.
Very nice shot.
Cheers
Santo

Hi John,

I did not see the pier or the kiosk whe I visited Melbourne in May 1981. Your point of view is leading the eyes towards the kiosk wich is framed by the fence. I like the style of architecture of the kiosk where the details and colors are clear and precise. The light brings out the colors. have a nice day.

Hello John. I can see that to take great pride in your work. I like this image because it is very clean. The sharpness is flawless and the architecture is in perfect vertical line with the frame. The lamp post is interesting against the white handrails and the whole image is very pleasant to look at. Well done again and keep on sharing, John. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Hi John. If only I understood the machinations that went into producing this perfect rendition of the kiosk. My compliments on your skills and artistic sense. Wonderfully distinct details, impeccable use of light and creative PoV. Most enjoyable scene. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello John,

Good crisp imagery here representing this locally famous pier. I particularly think the cream paint combines pleasantly with the clear blue sky. It is good to see a few odd people walking around and enjoying the coastal surrounds, but it is equally good that none obstruct the main feature here. It is pleasing to see that the local council has decided to keep this homely building in good condition instead of allowing it to fall into disrepair which happens often to such things unfortunately. The red door and splashes of colour on the posts to the side liven up the colour variety a bit. It is subtle but the impact is great. Well done.

John,
Technically, a perfect shot. Composition, colors, clarity and sharpness are just pitch perfect. Beautiful and relaxing atmosphere. Wish I were there.

John,
an amazing clarity and sharpness. I wonder about the composition if you would have taken 1 or 2 steps to the right to free the lamp from the roof and using the right border of the pier as a line leading straight to the building. Those ar just my 2 penny toughts on an extraordinarily well done shot.
Peter

Hi John,
amazing sharpness and brightness in this shot where the colours and the excellent quality make the difference and the shot beautiful! There's nothing to criticize here, just enjoy the beautiful result you delivered. Once again thanks for sharing with us the useful workflow note along the great note..a perfect TE package.
Thanks,

Igor

p.s: I'm sooooo envious of that sky!!!!!!

Hi John
Amazing colours and POV in this excellent composition. Very well managed the light and the sharpness superb
Have a nice day
Aires

PS - Thanks for your visit and comments

Hi John.
Delightful shot, one that I've been thinking I must take for ages! Lovely crispness and colour. The kiosk is nicely placed off centre, and the lamps add to the perspective and depth. I must admit I'm not quite sure why you would use ISO400 and such a high shutter speed/small aperture combination for this one, and I'm also not sure about the wisdom of what seems to be strong noise reduction in the sky. The building is very sharp except for the edge of the wrought iron thingy on the roof and the weather vane pole, if one looks closely. I don't know much about layers I must confess, something I ought to address, so I can't follow all that well your detailed workflow, although I wish I could. You certainly have got tremendous sharpness on the structures in this one, and there's no doubt about your good eye for a composition.
Regards,
Andrew

Hello John

Hi John,
That's an excellent composition. The colours are great to! But isn't it tilted a little to the left?
Best regards
Marc

Hello John,
What a beautifully restored Vicorian/Edwardian era kiosk. I feel that I am in a time machine when I look at this elegant building. They should also add aother small ice cream parlor if there is room for one. Beautiful photograph with fantastic sharpness and composition!
Stan

Hello John,
A lovely building and an interesting location!
The architecture is captured with sharp fine details where the red door is a strong eye-catcher...
Fine light, good lead-in and attractive colours!
Greetings,

Hello John

Lighting plays a vital role in assessing a wonderful shot.

The geometry that forms in the composition is welcome, from your POV. Good brightness, contrast, balance, color and framing.

John

Hi John,
Good pov to show some perspective effect to reach the building, good balancing of symmetri, distinct image, nice color, well done, thanks for sharing the interesting history.
