A previous shot of The Queen (Victoria) and the Bridge, was an HDR, taken from night shots, and it was a little dark to really see this great ship. Hopefully showing the queen in better light will give people a real appreciation for this lady. I’m actually going to include 3 shots in the post today. I watched this ship and the people around it for a couple of days, and would like to share some of that, if only a small fraction of what I saw.

The first shot (main post) is taken from ground level up front of the ship. It was taken after the initial hype, on first arrival had died down a little. This shot doesn’t really give a good impression of the size, because perspectives make the people (and seagull) look a lot larger than they are (in comparison). Still it provides I think a decent view of the structure. The shot was timed to the birds, actually I saw a flock of them coming across so I was a little disappointed I only got 3 birds, and with my speed, not all that crisp. The second shot, to be found in the workshop, is “ Portrait of a Queen”. With a lot of us running around taking pictures of the Queen, this lady sat down on the Overseas Passenger Terminal Observation Deck and very calmly painted a picture. I had to capture that one. Finally in the third shot, second workshop, I’ve pulled back a bit and you will find a shot of Sydney Cove (Circular Quay) with the Queen Victoria docked at the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Again, this isn’t a fair shot to look at size, because of perspectives, but the ship to the right of the Queen is the Manly Ferry. This is the largest ferry in the Sydney Ferries Service. Fully loaded it carries 1,100 passengers.

Workflow for the first shot was as follows:
Shot was taken in Raw, with a jpeg for reference (ISO 280 31 mm @f/9.5, 1/90)
NEF file adjusted for exposure, shadow and vignetting
Cropped with perspective to pull flag poles into alignment with edge
Levels – adjusted black points, and midpoints by eye
Curves – minimal, some slight contrast only in RGB
Added an overlay layer and dodged and burned with 5-20% opacity black and white Saturation layer +22 to master
Saved as a tiff
Cropped, resized, reduced noise on sky selection (but excluded smoke from stack), added a layer, inversed selection, sharpened with USM, modified sharpening with a layer mask (30-80% opacity black brush), framed and saved as a jpeg

All the three photos are excellent. It is a very nice work. The WS2 could have well been a picture of an apartment block if we did not know the story of this posting. Regarding WS2, I only have to comment on how lucky you are in Sydney, having the wonderful harbour. All those big ships do not have the same impact when they are in Brisbane. Well done.
Antonio

Hi John,
I don't often get over here and was wondering if you had been down to the harbour lately, :) she didn’t have a good reception up here in Brisbane, rained all day and had to tie up in a not so pretty part of the Brisbane Harbour, but this shows her in all her glory, wonderful colours, excellent detail, really nice work, all the best Cheers Rick :)

Hello John,

The two superstructure look great side by side. The shape and design of the bridge is an eye catcher here while I amaze at the size of this huge boat. Excellent clarity and sharpness as the image display good details and colours. Interesting how a massive floating structure can draw so much attention. Nice work John.

Bonsoir John
A well presented picture of the Queen Victoria, good colors and sharp picture of this beautiful boat, Great catch with many people look at to see the boat. Very well done..

Hello John,
Congratulations for this serie.
Both workshops deserve a main post too.
This one is just great. I like the way you show this somptuous ship and bridge, in the middle of the crowd.
Even the bird is coming fast to admire the view ;-)
The whole composition is wonderful.
Regards,
Marianne

Hi John,
Quite different but still excellent shot of this big cruise ship. And this place is just lovely, no wonder there's always lots of people over there. Well framed giving space for ship, people and the bridge.
WS #2 has new PoV for me, looks great too!

Hi John. Top stuff. Great perspective and composition. The people and even the bridge seem to be dwarfed by the ship.Terrific light and crisp colours. Well done. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi John,

A nice image of the Queen Victoria ship and of the Harbour bridge in the background. The people in the picture are giving an idea of the size of the ship. The point of view is giving depth to the photo. It clear and precise. Well done, have a nice day.

Nice shot of this massive ship! The ship seems almost to dwarf the bridge itself. The people also help to show the scale of the boat. Great work!

Hi John,
Great Stuff. All there shots are superb and worthy of posting on their own. You even managed to capture a seagull. Well done.

Santo

Hello John. Sometimes you make me wonder how do you manage good composition. This is a typical holiday snap but all the subjects and elements are cooperating well when you are there taking pictures. The bridge is a subject by itself and this huge ship is a real stunner from low angle. Even the bird is making an impact here against that fabulous spotless blue sky. Kudos John! Have a wonderful day ahead.
Regards, Jusni.

Hello John,

I looked to the other pictures and all three are wonderful, certainly the night picture.
You chose a excellent combination with the bridge and the the Queen Victoria with a very lively atmosphere around the boat.
Very well composition and nice daily life picture.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice weekend,
John.

Hello John,
That is an impressive vessel!
Good point of view and a fine composition, and inclusion of the crowd really adds life...
I like how the bridge is used to balance the composition, and the colours are very attractive!
Greetings,

John,
this is a beautiful shot, but this time I don't want to talk about compo, perspective, scale and so on because everything is perfect and the majesty of the Q.V. is simply impressive!
This time I just want to say that I'm amazed by the escalation in terms of quality you're achieveing in the last your posts. I think everything started with "Catani Memorial Clock Tower"; I might be wrong but it looks like you've changed some process in the PP (is this possible?). I mean, you have always delivered great quality but since that shot things are even better!! About this shot I'm looking at the details in the Q.V. and the clearness not only in the sky but throughout...it's amazing man!! simply amazing!!
Thanks for sharing with us! and looking forward to the next post!
Cheers

Igor

This serie is really great and again I'm fascinated by the scale you get. I wish I could see that for real, must be really amazing.
Good pov and framing (with the bridge in the BG).

Hi John,

Another magnificent image of this imposing boat. I am glad someone on TE was able to document this historic arrival in Sydney so thoroughly. I was going to comment of the grey smudge in the sky above the boat but I realized that this is actually the smoke/steam rising from the funnel. A good capture also of the almost fully unfurled flag and passing seagull. I would have attempted a panoramic stitch but perhaps it would have been difficult to do with a moving crowd in the FG, a stitch would be totally impossible unless everyone was still. The colours and clarity is wonderful. TFS.

Matt
