Photographer’s Note
This afternoon I made a discovery!
For the last few weeks a large flock of mystery birds have been hanging around near my house. I only ever see them in the afternoon as they gather together for the evening. Unfortunately, because of this, they are always silhoetted and it is difficult to see what kind of birds they are and it's hard to try and take photos of them.
Today it was as if they awaited my arrival. When I got home from work, I look across the street and there was a whole heap of these birds sitting on the powerlines. They were still very difficult to identify, but fortunately I did some photography for work today and had my camera on me. I quickly swapped lenses and managed to get a few shots of these birds with my Sigma lens.
Now I could see the colours of this mystery bird as well as its profile and its two long interesting central tail feathers. I looked through my Australian Birds book and did lots of googling. Then all of sudden I came across an image that identified these birds. These mystery birds are no mystery anymore. They are beautiful Rainbow Bee-eaters!
I've cropped this photo quite a bit and have tried to brighten it up so that you can see the colours of the bee-eater. That is why the photo is not of very good quality. But I thought I'd share my little discovery with you all. These birds are so cute :)
I've posted another photo of this bird on TrekLens if you'd like to have a look.

Hi Claudia,
I see many of these flying rainbows along the Kedron Brook bikeway near my home. They can be seen early in the morning or later in the day towards dusk swooping at insects. I love the unique sound they make; it is unlike any other bird around. I particular like this Rainbow Bee-Eater photo from another site. The elegant detail of the tail filaments is clearly captured in your photo. The reflection on the eye is ok, unavoidable but sort of peculiar. I think that more brightness would help bring out those pastel colours more. But I know what the weather is like here at the moment and understand the darkness. A pretty inventive frame, you always have a good border technique to suit. Hope they stick around so you can shoot more!
Matt
