I took this image in Rundle Mall in Adelaide, South Australia's CBD. The 'Balls' have recently been restored to their former beauty. A while back it was impossible to see any reflections, they look great now. The young girls and the child were fascinated by their reflections, it was great to watch.

Mall’s Balls

Adelaide's central shopping area, Rundle Mall, is home to the sculpture popularly referred to as the Mall's Balls. The official tile of the sculpture is 'Spheres' and it is the work of sculptor Bert Flugelman. The spheres are made of polished stainless steel and each has a diameter of 2.15 metres. The sculpture was commissioned by Adelaide City Council in 1977 for the new Rundle Mall and was donated by the Hindmarsh Building Society to mark the Society's centenary. The Mall's Balls are now a popular meeting place.

The Malls Balls have returned - two months and $23,000 later - giving back to Adelaide its favourite meeting place.

"I don't know where people have been meeting each other for the past two months," quipped Adelaide City Councillor Richard Hayward as the mirror-surfaced dual-sphere sculpture was lowered back into position in Rundle Mall this morning.

The balls were out of the Mall for a $23,000 refurbishment to rid them of the dents and scratches accumulated in their 30 years. The 20 years since the last major clean indicates how long this latest restoration will last.

This mall definitely has shiny balls. Great work of art and very modern. The reflections and shape seem to gather crowds. Excellent note to explain the sculpture. The people give the image size to show the size of the balls. Nice work and good use of outdoor light. Thanks Debbie.

Oh this is too cool. Looks like I might have to come back to Adelaide. I love looking at mirror shots, I go looking for the photographer. I'm guessing that's you with a friend. Anyway great shot, inclusion of the girls works very well here. It provides an excellent example of the fun these things will provide. Great note.

Thanks, John

Hi Debbie,
good POV for the balls and good moment with the five in front. Nice view in the back direction, complete distorted. But this offers a nice shopping mall with a lovely blue sky.

Hello Debbie,
They certainly seem to be attracting attention. A good capture of daily life and urban art. The children add much to the atmosphere and the reflections are well taken.

Hi Debbie, I love this piece of moden art, I wish we could of seen more of it, however the reflection of the people & the buildings in the top ball looks very good, nice light, I like it, kind regards Wilson.

Hi Deb,
Great shot of the Malls Balls! Great distorted reflections, they certainly are shiny aren't they! The people add interest and perspective to the image. Well done and TFS

Hello Debbie,
Fine capture of the kids experimenting with the amazing sphere. Photo wouldn't be the same without them. Very sharp, too. Regards,
Hakan

Debbie, that framing is very funny and gives a double impression with almost the same angle of the unseen (reflected) background. It seems to me that you were quite far away, at least I can't see you clearly in the reflections :-)

Hi , Debbie .
Great photo of these shiny and reflecting balls . The twisted reflection certainly draw people's attention !
Composition ,background and colours are perfect for setting out the steel construction !
T.f.s.

Greetings
Dorte.

Hi Debbie.
The texture of this polished metal artwork is really fascinating. It's probably what are thinking those young visitors standing in front of it...
Interesting note!

Thanks for sharing.

From one Debbie to another....

Good ol' Malls Balls!! I felt very homesick looking at this photo. It was one of my meeting places as a kid. I met so many friends there - a meeting spot for so many South Australians. Great composition - I love how you captured the kids touching it.... it makes the most amazing sound. Happy 30th Malls Balls!! Well Done and congrats also on finishing your degree!!!
