Gibson’s Steps is a location on the Great Ocean Road along “Shipwreck Coast”. This spot is actually the first sightseeing stop in Port Campbell National Park, for people heading west on this road.

The “Steps” refers to the staircase of 86 steps which leads down to the beach at the base of this 70 m limestone cliff.

This shot was one of several that I took from the cliff top. Being in a rush to get to the 12 Apostles, with night and a storm coming, we didn’t actually descend on this trip, (next time maybe).

Much of this from:
http://www.greatoceanwalk.com.au/feature_page.asp?featureid=6&submenuid=14

Workflow was as follow:
Shot in Raw - NEF files adjusted for highlights and shadow
Rotated to level (based on horizon) and cropped
Adjusted levels
Adjusted curves – land and sea done separately from the sky
Dodged and burned with overlay layer (5% opacity brush)
Added a layer for sharpening and “over-sharpened” with Smart Sharpen
Modified sharpening with a layer mask (15% opacity black brush)
Saved as a tiff
For this post, further cropped and sharpened for the reduced size, framed, and saved as a jpeg

Hi John,
Wonderfully stark ocean landscape with the ominous stormy sky looming over the silver sea as it crashing the red sands below the great cliff that is surrounded by lovely grey rocks and scrub pines.
Regards, Tom

Hi John,
Cloudy and GRAY sky... but a beautiful view!
The ocean, the cliffs...very pretty image!
I liked it very much. TFS!

Hi John. A superb coastal view of this famous place. The clouds are wonderful in this composition. Very good details provided. TFS. Murray.

PS It looks like a wonderful trip along this part of Australia's long coastline.

Hi John,
A truly wonderful location, great pov and although it's not the best light, you created something very special out of it. The great ocean road is very famous and i love to drive that road myself.
Regards, Henk

Great dramatic scene! The dark clouds in the sky give this a very moody feel, and really suit the name "Shipwreck Coast". The huge rock standing out in the ocean is good too, adding to the threatening tone. Well done!

John, c'est un paysage d'une beauté sauvage et presque dramatique. J'aime le ciel et la belle couleur des falaises. Du très beau travail.

Hello John,

Very nice three parts picture, to the right rocks and vegetation, to the left the sea and white foam, the sky with imminent clouds, also perspective and depth view are superb.

Best regards,
John.

John, looking for the first time into your collection I have to admit that you're a perfect ambassador for the australian beauty! Very thoughtfull and nice photography that you have here. The composition is exquisite and you choose a perfect POV. The difficult and challenging light conditions are mastered wonderfully. I'm very impressed with you summary of your PP. I did that for a while myself and stopped with it, because no one else was doing it, but I think that is very sincere and adds to the learning purpose that we all strive to have at TE. My only minor negative comment is the lack of sharpness and I don't understand how you got there.

Hi John,

Tremendous .. powerful .. dark .. moody ... the thing I find the most intriguing .. strangely enough .. is how this dark and moody scene interacts with the bright white background.

take care,

John

John this a dramatic looking pictue. The clouds create a special, mysterious mood to th image and the setting is plain beautiful. Well composed image with nice, dark colours and good details. Nicely done John.

Hi John,

The light and the sky make or an exquisite unique setting, very beautiful and dramatic. Nice composition, eventhout the rock is on the center it works. I Like the textures, we can almost fell the rocks and the sea. Excellent deeph of field.

Cheers,

Flavia

Very good framing and balance in this composition combining earth, sea and sky. The clouded sky and strong sea are impressive and dramatic. The little band of light in the background is enough to provide some color to the picture.

All the best,

Emmanuel

Hi John. You have created a very dramatic image with your PP and light handling. Good composition with strong diagonal elements and good foreground interest. Nice work and thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hello John,
A beautiful seaside capture!
Very moody light lends fine colours to the scenery, I appreciate the good diagonal in the composition and the dramatic sky hovering above!
Greetings,
Pablo -

G'day John.
Ahh, one of my favorite places. Had my honeymoon here. Many special memories. Love the dark, brooding light and that threatening sky. Good POV too. A little diffrent from the usual. Well done.
Greetings from Romania. Steve.

John,
Great ocean scene with a truly ominous sky. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail. This is a very nice view of this serene place.
TFS,
Asa

John,

what awesome scenery you have to choose from. I visited Queensland a couple of years back and it was beautiful. I don'y know that I will get the opportunity to go back but I would love to spend three months there really seeing the country.

Your shot is great, it is clear and colorful and dark enough to be really intreaguing. Keep up the great work.

Greg

Hi John - some people would be disappointed with this light, but the powerful overcast has its own unique appeal, especially when accompanied by such attractive scenery.

Hi John,

A good POV the Gibson surf and turf area, the photo has a good composition, DOF and nice colors. Thanks for sharing.

Hi John. Beautiful POV that incorporates the encrusted rocks at the bottom, like some brooding alien presence, the yellowish cliff face and the stack in the middle and the ominous sky above.Great light. Well done. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello John. This is really gloomy and I meant it in a positive way. :-) You have captured the mood brilliantly with the cliff as a stunner in the foreground. That solitary rock on the small waves ponding the shore sits on the sweet spot beautifully. I will definite lose the sky with my PP, but you have brought out the vibrancy brilliantly here. Alway top class and very well done. Best regards. Jusni
