Cathedral Rock on the Great Ocean Road, near Lorne, is not the most popular place along the route. In fact when we stopped here, there were only a couple of other people on the beach. That was okay with me, I had stopped for a shot of this sandy beach with the surf bouncing off the rocks and that great sky. I had everything I wanted here.

The road incidentally runs just along the base of that steep hill, so this is one of the views a driver has as he drives along it.

There is a lot of good information for this trip at: http://www.greatoceanroad.org/index.asp

Workflow was as follow:
Shot in Raw - NEF files adjusted for highlights and shadow
Rotated to level and cropped
Adjusted levels
Adjusted curves – land and sea done separately from the sky
Dodged and burned with overlay layer (5% opacity brush)
Selective noise reduction on the sky
Added a layer for sharpening and “over-sharpened” with Smart Sharpen
Modified sharpening with a layer mask (10% opacity black brush)
Saved as a tiff
For this post, further sharpened for the reduced size, framed, and saved as a jpeg

Hi John,
A great shot of this very appealing beach!
I like so much the beautiful scene catched, with very appropiated exposure settings.
You managed pretty well all the elements here to build this excellent composition, in wich the sea, sand, mountain and sky complemts each other in a very harmonic way.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi John,
Fantastic cloud pattern seen on the beautiful blue sky above the lonely rock strewn beach and crashing surf. The colors are true and details sharp.
Regards, Tom

Hi John. Good beachscape well composed. I like to see the texture of the sand and the blue sky. A great drive holiday by the look of this interesting series. TFS. Murray.
