Photographer’s Note

Immediately after I took my photograph of the Wentworth Falls I turned 90 degrees to the right to look out over beautiful Jamison Valley, with the Valley of the Waters and the sandstone cliffs of King’s Tableland to the left. The outcrop to the right is Sublime Point. I couldn’t capture it all in one shot, so what you have before you now is a pair of photographs stitched together. Jamison Valley is a part of the Cox’s River Canyon system in the Blue Mountains. The cliffs surrounding this valley can reach heights of up to 1000 metres. The valley floor as you can see is very densely forested. Those are full grown trees down there, some greater than 50 meters high.

This is one very small part of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. This blue-green expanse extends 200 kilometers on a north-south axis, covering 10,000 square kilometers. I’ve got a lot of exploring to do.

This particular spot is less traveled than that found at Echo Point (I’ll get pictures of it up eventually too), but I found it just as beautiful, with easier parking. The walk down was a little tougher but very interesting too. One of the earliest visitors and explorers of this spot was Charles Darwin, with Paul de Strzlecki in the 1800’s. He mistakenly surmised that this area was once filled with sea water.

Some of this from: Merideth, Peter and Don Fuchs, The Australian Geographic Book of The Blue Mountains, 1999

Workflow for this photograph was as follows:
Two shots were taken in Raw with a polarizing lens at exposure 1/45 sec f13
The two NEF files were adjusted in parallel for shadows and highlights
They were stitched together into a panorama and cropped. The fit was actually very good. I didn’t see saturation problems between different pictures as I sometimes do.
The new photo was adjusted for curves and saved as a tiff
For this posting I adjusted the image size, framed, sharpened using smart sharpen, and saved as a jpeg.
