The Obelisk in Hyde Park on Elizabeth Street is one of the earliest monuments recording the beneficence of a Sydney mayor. It was constructed and unveiled in 1857 by the then mayor George Thornton. The monument is actually a sewer vent. You can see the grill work on top. It became a joke around town and led to it being dubbed “Thornton’s Scent Bottle”. When I took this picture I had no idea it was anything other than a monument. It wasn’t until I did my research that I discovered its secondary purpose. These were very creative people in Sydney back in 1857.
Much of this from: http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/AboutSydney/documents/VisitorGuidesInformation/WalkingTours/WalkTourWater.pdf
The photo was shot from the west side of Elizabeth Street into Hyde Park. I waited for the traffic to clear, and shot. Post processing included cropping, shadow adjustments, levels adjustments and minor sharpening for this post. |

Hi John,
Wonderful clear chrisp colors and sharp details to this monument with its double meaning. Excellent wind action to the two flags.
Regards, Tom
