[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Obelisk in Hyde Park on Elizabeth Street is one of the earliest monuments recording the beneficence of a Sydney mayor. It was constructed and unveiled in 1857 by the then mayor George Thornton. The monument is actually a sewer vent. You can see the grill work on top. It became a joke around town and led to it being dubbed “Thornton’s Scent Bottle”. When I took this picture I had no idea it was anything other than a monument. It wasn’t until I did my research that I discovered its secondary purpose. These were very creative people in Sydney back in 1857.

Much of this from: http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/AboutSydney/documents/VisitorGuidesInformation/WalkingTours/WalkTourWater.pdf

The photo was shot from the west side of Elizabeth Street into Hyde Park. I waited for the traffic to clear, and shot. Post processing included cropping, shadow adjustments, levels adjustments and minor sharpening for this post.

Hi John,
Wonderful clear chrisp colors and sharp details to this monument with its double meaning. Excellent wind action to the two flags.
Regards, Tom
