This piece is typical in its unusual shape and high polish of the Tarascans' pottery. These people were the Aztecs' neighbours, equally warlike and bent on conquest. The Aztecs tried twice to invade their lands but were unsuccessful.
You were correct if you realized that this vessel symbolizes fertility.

AN excellent image of this pottery vessel. I like the fine lines in your framing which pick up the red and orange from the image.

Interesting object and a lovely example of still life photography.
Looks like in spite of their warrior-like nature Tarascans had a lot of sense of beauty which is reflected in this intriguing vessel.
Symbolic meaning aside, I wonder what they used it for?
