Australia has a huge coastline, but its interior and country areas are truly vast. Many children living in these isolated areas have never seen the sea before. Thanks to organisations like the Royal Far West and Stewart House, country kids can have holidays in our coastal areas and enjoy our many beaches. These kids here are from the Australian Outback and even though this was mid Autumn, with water temperature around 10 degrees, they loved every minute in the water. The sharpness of this photo is not great, but I have posted this photo anyway, because I thought it was a special moment. It was beautiful watching the joy on their faces.
In my Workshop is another photo of the lads having fun.

Very good use of shutter speed and interesting picture came out of this. I like this.
Such a dreamy feeling of the water.
MJR (3340) 2012-03-28 3:05
What a delightful picture !
You have conveyed the joy you saw on their faces, in your super composition, which is strong, yet simple. The shutter speed has had a wonderful effect on the water, freezing some movement, and blurring elsewhere, giving a very dynamic appearance to your image. The speed was also quick enough, with one exception, to freeze the boys, so you can see in their posture and faces their evident delight at their new surroundings.
Good job, complete with a lovely informative note.
I have to ask; what was it that kept their attention off to the right, a monster wave, a boat, surfer or a lady immodestly dressed for the beach maybe ?!

Ciao Lisa ,
Black , brown , blond ... all the kids on earth enjoy playing with the waves . A beautiful capture here , with an effective diagonal . Nice effect of the choice of shutter speed , even if a more natural effect could have work well , too .
sevy (14437) 2012-03-28 3:42
You found the right speed setting for this shot. You kept the kids almost sharp and there is a lot of movement with the blur on the waves.
Perhaps to crop a bit, to remove the element in the bottom left corner?
mauro61 (52545) 2012-03-28 4:47
Ottima e suggestiva resa,
un caro saluto
CLODO (26652) 2012-03-28 5:17
Sharpness is not all in a picture! The POV, the diagonal line, the roaring waves and the children waiting for a big one are really eye catching. Water at 10°c and still bathing, not for me , thank you!
paololg (31446) 2012-03-28 5:19
Ciao cara Diavolina,

Well done! TFS!
Sergiom (45918) 2012-03-28 5:30
It is amazing to realize that the picture is so clear when the exposure time is so long. The boys didn't move at all when the water is. The technique is excellent.
Nice the see you back.
timecapturer (37470) 2012-03-28 5:31
a delightful shot, full of atmosphere and a great sense of movement. The sense of fun is palpable and this hand held capture is so accomplished. Bravo!
SnapRJW (23998) 2012-03-28 5:34
Hello Lisa - Beautiful, a shot that focuses on the joy the country children experience as they revel in the sea and surely matches the joy the organisers feel when they see what their kindness brings to the children. Apart from the churning ocean and very good composition what impresses me is the mix of children, great to see them having fun together! Dynamic shot. Warm regards rosemary
tyro (15841) 2012-03-28 5:36
A beautiful and perfectly composed shot of this bunch of lads having some well deserved fun in the water. Your slow shutter speed has softened the water nicely, so much so that it looks as though an incoming wave is about to devour them all! I presume, however, that this is quite a safe pool, well protected from the batterings of the sea.
In fact, if I'm not mistaken, I rather suspect that this might be the very same place as this!
Despite your self-deprecating note, I think that this is very sharp and clear - you must have an extremely steady hand at 105mm, even with IS on that lens.
P.S. All boys here - do the girls from the outback not get a chance of some fun too?
bayno (18338) 2012-03-28 6:34
dale54 (5753) 2012-03-28 7:48
lisa hello.like this one here, man, check out those waves!they look like they're having fun, nice all around pic! tfs! dr

A highly informative photo! It's really nice how organizations do wonderful things and even create a program for these country kids. Fantastic moment for this young lads, love the way they are lined up waiting for the next wave. Love the soft blurs on the water, very nice effect. Great capture!
photoray (6828) 2012-03-28 8:52
Howdy Lisa Bronte,
A poetic moment of young lads' anticipation for the crashing waves, and your slo-mo blur adds feel to the dramatic scene.
I learned to swim in the Pacific Ocean, lakes and rivers. And your image brings back memories and emotions.
PS: I viewed the Butterflies through a swim mask and underwater camera, which was like swimming in an aquarium only unlimited...
ikeharel (44395) 2012-03-28 9:03
In 7/1978 I took a train from Denver to SFO, and next to me there was an old couple sitting most of the long way without talking, almost.
Once the train approach the SFO-bay, the man was standing and shouting like a kid:"Look, here is the ocean, come and see...so big..." it had been the first time this old couple from Nebraska saw the ocean - So, I can comprehand what you meant on this fine image you posted and written about.
Cheers, lovely photo.
vasilpro (40565) 2012-03-28 10:25
Wonderful daily life compositions, beautiful scenes with these boys enjoying the waves and the sea, lovely light and colors, excellent clarity and sharpness, very nice POV, TfS!
rbassin (13479) 2012-03-28 10:57
dip (22132) 2012-03-28 12:02
very nice capture of the scene with the kids at beach,I like the light management and the framing,
thanks for sharing,
brianmcc (5832) 2012-03-28 12:25
what a fantastic action picture. the line of young swimmers is superb creating the diagonal across the frame. the slow shutter speed really captures a sense of movement not only form the boys, but more dramatically in the water which seems so full of energy. a wonderful composition perfectly exposed and executed.
lakshmip1949 (19110) 2012-03-28 12:40
This is a priceless shot. I can see how happy these boys are even at this cold temperatures of water. What a wonderful gift these organizations have given to these children. A very nice shot with great atmosphere.
PecoBud (3824) 2012-03-28 13:39
WOW, they look like they are having so much fun despite the cold temp of the water. Love the light management and the POV has put a smile on my face. Thank you Lisa for this post!!
LOOOK13 (19046) 2012-03-28 13:55
Une superbe image!!!
Une scène trés bien captée aveC un effet donné à l'eau trés agréable.
Royaldevon (21693) 2012-03-28 13:56
Isn't it amazing how much is missed by children! These children love their experiences of the sea ... rarely experienced. We have inner city children who have never experienced the countryside, never stroked a horse or heard a lamb bleat! Thank goodness there are groups eager to rectify these inadiquacies.
What you are showing here is a fantastically moving scene. The sharpness of the shot is fine for relaying the mood and the excitement of the occasion. Your fine composition, with the diagonal line from the bottom l/h corner and the separation line of the fencing, shines through.
I must say, the rising spume and the choppy water makes me feel I'd be a little nervous!
My warm regards,
macjake (45896) 2012-03-28 14:52
the longer i view this scene, i can't help but wonder what on earth has captured the boys attention off frame to the right.
are there bikini girls there or what? lol
the slow 1/6 gives a blanket effect on the water in places, especially up top - i enjoy that.
enjoy your day
carlo62 (19797) 2012-03-28 15:27
emka (64550) 2012-03-28 15:35
Ciao Lisa, very nice photo showing this spacial moment. Excellent diagonal composition. fantastic effect, marvelous resul. They look happy but with 10 degrees it must be very cold. When I was younger i could swim with 16, but now I prefer the water temperature near 26. I must go far to have this possibility.
skippy007 (12504) 2012-03-28 21:21
Ciao Cara Lisa, there are so many that I haven't commented on, have I been away for that long? Nice shot, I think the slow shutter speed has worked really making this a dynamic image with great atmosphere. The moment is well captured, you really know how to put pressure on a guy to perform, on TE that is ;), thanks for the mention but more importantly thanks for listening :)
I enjoyed my time in Sydney, thanks heaps.
PS I looked at the WS version, just as good, both lovely images.
sabermonajati (8339) 2012-03-28 22:48
you captured misty waves skilful with chield.
in iran started new year.
ourania (19024) 2012-03-28 23:04
I love this photo, the way it is composed, the light, the colours, the agitation of the water and the excitement of the children. I've always been familiar with the sea and been living by the sea for many years now so it's always mesmerizing to watch the awe of people making a first contact with it, it's really touching. Your picture is brilliant and so full of energy! Well done and thank you!
All the best,
ifege (9913) 2012-03-28 23:39
A great one actually Lisa - the kids are sharp enough and the rest doesn't need the same sharpness - it just all looks good.
lousat (64601) 2012-03-29 4:14
Buonanotte! Luciano
npecanhuk (56480) 2012-03-29 4:18
That's a very interesting and really lovely picture!
It must be lots of fun for those young boys to see and feel the sea for the first time!
Great idea and superb visual results!
TFS - congrats,
BennyV (13058) 2012-03-29 4:31
Wow, this is a stunning picture. Lovely exposure to create those soft textures on the water. A pity the two guys on the far right could just remain still just a bit longer. Sublime composition too. Both thumbs up!
federico (1603) 2012-03-29 4:49
hi lisa grea shot, great use of long exposure and interesting subject
chrisvek (6995) 2012-03-29 5:23

Have a nice day,
mkamionka (27197) 2012-03-29 13:44
very interesting note and a spectacular photo.
I see you are much less active on TE as well.
Amazing effect of the long time exposure. The dramatic waves captured in motion contrasts nicely with the sharp bodies of boys looking at something very attractive.
danos (78358) 2012-03-29 22:32
spectacular scenery with the young boys to really enjoy the vast waves of the Australian seas.I like the good placemement in the frame as are sitting on the pole.Excellent snapshot that in combination with the WS, make it as an excellent reportage shot.
shevchenko (18725) 2012-03-30 2:22
The children at the middle of water, the waves, the colors and lighting are all togather creating a fantastic view, distinct photo, nice artistic shot. Informative note to introduce the living style of these children, interesting composition, thanks for sharing.

Ciao cara Lisa,
Impressionante scena di mare!Fantastico shot!
ChrisJ (91420) 2012-04-01 1:48
Love the motion blur of the whitewater waves here & the diagonal line of the kids on the edge of the saltwater swimming pool. Good sharpness & contrasted light. Have a nice & relaxing Sunday!
dkmurphys (42699) 2012-04-01 7:45
Very fine capture from the seaside. Brave kids against the waves. Well catch, have a lovely Sunday.

Sharpness seems pretty good to me Lisa,
Great note and wonderful shoT.
kordinator (14797) 2012-04-02 23:20
Very nice scenery and joy on the faces of children.
Fantastic scene, excellent timing.
The colors and light are perfect.
Nicely written note.
Excellent composition and quality fotogafije.
kiks (11605) 2012-04-03 3:29
something surreal about this image because of the colors and the long exposure. i love it.
notrap (5026) 2012-04-03 3:43
now I know the water has only 10°, I see that they shiver! Or maybe it´s Fahrenheit?
I agree with Clodo, sharpness is not everything, it is a beautiful photo, the blurred waves even add a nice effect. Good example for the advantages of 3200 ASA!
Waylim (23502) 2012-04-05 9:47
Sorry to get to you so late. I'm having problem with the site. Can't seem to see photo, when I click on it. it just a blank white page but the adv come up very well.
Anyway, I was lucky to get to this shot. Excellent shot of this pool once again. the Presence of the children having fun enjoying the extreme wave condistion is really great. I love the fact that there are multi ethnic also. Excllent energy shown and fun spirit.
Thanks Lisa. My secret dirty soul mate.
aliabazari (10284) 2012-04-07 23:11
Very beautiful and exciting. Dynamics and movement in this image is enjoyable and lovely.
Thanks to my friend.
Angshu (52994) 2012-04-15 4:11
Hello dear Lisa!
An excellent shot! The water fills the entire frame & the slowish shutter speed makes the water surf looks like white web. The boys surely are having fun here...looks like they are looking towards the right, anticipating something...a big wave perhaps? Very different & fine work!
