Photographer’s Note

This is the Breakfast Creek Hotel, one of Brisbane’s most famous historical landmarks. Bars or pubs are usually called hotels in Australia. The explorer, John Oxley, came down the Brisbane River in 1824, looking for a site to found a new colony. He selected this spot and landed here to enjoy his breakfast, thus giving the creek its name. However his breakfast was disturbed by a party of hostile aboriginal men and he sailed on down the river to select the sport that because the City of Brisbane. Later, the creek became a cheap lodging area for workmen and the bar became a center of social life. Today, it is preserved as an historical monument and does a huge trade in beer and rather mass produced fast food. The area around the hotel is now called Oxley, after the explorer.
