Photographer’s Note
For the young it often more important to look good rather than keep warm.
The Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne begins on the 1st October and concludes on Saturday the 7th November.
It includes the centrepiece of the Melbourne Cup Carnival the ‘Race that Stops a Nation' the Emirates Melbourne cup to be run on Tuesday, 3rd November 2009.
It’s the greatest day on the Australian racing and social calendar – the one day when everyone, young and old, stops to partake in this unique cultural tradition.
The $5.65 million Emirates Melbourne Cup is the richest handicap race in the world, in 2008 prize money of $5.5 million going to; 1st $3,300,000 and trophies $50,000; 2nd $835,000; 3rd $420,000; 4th $220,000; 5th $150,000.
On Thursday the 5th November is the day for the very popular Crown Oaks. This day is the traditional ladies day, where women don their most feminine outfits for a day of champagne, fashion.
The Melbourne Cup Carnival concludes with Emirates Stakes Day on Saturday, 7 November 2009 featuring Victoria’s premier 1600m event, the Group 1 Emirates Stakes.
This shot was taken outside Flinders Street Station under the clocks, there was a train arriving from Flemington race track every seven minutes, full of well dressed people, all looked tired, some went home others sat around waiting, chatting, some even found their way across the road to the corner pub of Young & Jackson for maybe one or two cold beers & if time allowed I’m sure a quick look at Chloe.
Thanks to Andrew (macondo) a TE meeting has been organised for this Sunday in Melbourne, we have two attending from Malaysia, one or two from Sydney, one from Adelaide and it looks like eight from Melbourne.
Taken in the company of Steve (SteveH).

Ciao Santo, this is an interesting and extremely well-taken photo - most appropriate for this time of year and Melbourne's famous racing season. Nice choice of the B&W and vertical framing, with great sharpness and the reflection of the girls. Fashion always before warmth! See you soon, amico mio, Lisa.

Hi Santo, I recall that cold afternoon and these girls on the steps. The reflection of their faces on the screen opposite is an interesting inclusion. This image reflects well the tone of the afternoon, inappropriately (for the weather) dressed people coming and going, hanging around, at the end of an exciting day. cheers, Steve

Ciao Santo,
This one stands out in your gallery, with its crisp clarity and ample contrast in all the right spots. I used to wonder 'aren't they cold' in my cab driving days. I guess looking good explains it.
Nice picture and a clever b&w rendition.
Cheers

Hello Santo,
You street photo just gets better and better. At first sight, I was attracted by the beauty of this young girl's leg, then I got wrongly disappointed for a few seconds because I could not see her face. You have the ingenious way of getting the girls faces into this photo, even the reflection seems reasonably well composed. I suppose you didn't need any permission for a shot like this. The B&W certainly helps to minimise any BG distraction. Tell me the secret of getting great shot like this one with the sexy legs, when we meet next time with Bill, preferably without being noticed:))
take care

Ciao caro Santo,
eccellente B&W per ricordare questa grande manifestazione Australiana, molto bene descritta nelle tue note. Perfetta qualità fotografica che enfatizza la bellezza dei soggetti ;-) Interessante e curioso anche il riflesso sulla colonna. Ottimo lavoro, bravissimo!
Ciao, un abbraccio a tutti!

Greetings Santo,
Very good 150th posting :)
Great verticle B&W.
Clarity here is nicely achieved.
What created the reflection? It looks like a TV?
Enjoy the forthoming 'meet'. :))
Sorry I missed it :( Next time :]

Hello Santo,
An interesting street scene!
One might wonder what is the subject of the conversation, and also ponder the interaction between the three..
Composition wise a clever use of the mirror!
Greetings,

Ciao Santo.
Un bel bianco e nero di vita quotidiana, una scena esaltata dalla prospettiva grandangolare e arricchita dall'immagine ripetuta delle ragazze.
Ciao.

Hi santo.
I like this kind of street shot. Fine framing and reflection is so well seen. Pleasing gray tone in this b+w shot. TFS and best regards.
