Photographer’s Note

I took this photo on the last afternoon of my recent visit to outback Queensland. A large cloud had just rolled in and it did rain a little the next day.

The round hill across the paddocks is called Red Hill. Perhaps some indigenous people wandered up there in their dreamtime, but the first known people to walk up there were the Army in 1956. They placed a marker up there as part of Australia's contribution towards the International Geophysical Year. The International Geophysical Year was between 1957 and 1958 and it was a world-wide effort to co-ordinate the collection of geophysical data from around the world. The next group of people to climb the hill were my family in 1985.
